I really love Dungeon Defenders as a series, I started playing DD1 when it was free with Xbox live gold in like, 2013, and have never let that feeling go. I decided to re-buy it when I switched to pc and found this instead, after a quick glance I labeled it as just an overpriced remaster and bought DD1 bc its cheaper, but after replaying DD1 and doing everything again, I was desperate for more, and I knew from past experience that DD2 wouldn't satisfy. I started looking back into buying this and started to see new maps in the trailer, the original characters were still there, some of the DD2 characters were there, and people in the comments were calling this a remaster of DD1. It has new characters, new maps, and new story relative to DD1, so how is it 'just a remaster'? I bought the game then and started to investigate.

Key Points
1. Its not a remaster, it is a third installation in the series, it may not look like one initially because it does share quite a few maps from DD1
2. The story isn't super important. This might just be my opinion, but story in DD games hasn't really been a key point, so this is no different.
3. There are bugs. This may be a huge turnoff for some, but I feel like it adds more charm, the devs seem to be really open with what they're working on, and for the most part, some of the smaller bugs don't even seem to be a concern to them. There have been game breaking, save erasing, and progression blocking glitches, and I see a lot of people complaining about them, I played through the entire campaign 3 times and experienced none of these, so either they've since been patched, or I got extremely lucky.
4. Do not play in public lobbies. This has been a theme since DD2, but theres no reason to play public, you can hotswap between up to 6 characters while leveling all of them with shared xp. Unless you're desperate for help or someone to talk to, I do not suggest playing in public lobbies. Dungeon Defenders is a little notorious for being easily hackable, and I contribute my lack of experience ruining bugs to not playing in public lobbies, be it network issues, or hackers, bugs/glitches are always going to be more common in online play, no matter what game you play.

This has dragged on longer than i wanted it to, so I'll end it with this: if you're here to spend your life grinding Dungeon Defenders for the best loot, the newest items, and the most broken builds, you certainly can, but the entire community would prefer if you play Dungeon Defenders to have fun. You don't need to get mad just because you failed the hardest map on the highest difficulty settings, you don't need to rage at your teammates for placing a tower in a place you don't like, you don't need to get upset because the game is a little unbalanced. It's all in good fun, enjoy yourself :)
