As someone who has gone out of their way to play Costume Quest 1 every year for a few years now (simply because it's a personal Halloween tradition of mine), I have enjoyed the first one immensely. Because of this, I was apprehensive to say the least playing the second game.

If you have played the first game and are looking for a similar experience, Costume Quest 2 brings that feeling back with a tad more simplicity, but also some flavor. It still retains combat elements from the first game, combined with the same "battle costumes" concept that allows you to fight monsters. The costumes you choose between in this game are new. While a few costumes are lacking in appeal to me personally, there were some costumes that were immediately my favorites. (The hot-dog costume is adorable.) You also feel rewarded fighting and playing, as you can learn combat techniques that help you and you can tell the difference between your damage output before and after you learn them.

As for the story, it can be a little confusing, simply because it has time-traveling elements, which is confusing in and of itself. Old characters from Costume Quest 1 and Grubbins on Ice show up, so it really feels like you're playing the sequel to this game. The story line is a little ridiculous, but obviously had some thought and care put into it, and I found myself playing just to know exactly what would happen, and how it would happen.

There were some things that deterred me from it, and I'm not sure if I'll play it again. If I do, it will be in place of the first Costume Quest until I get every achievement. And then it's back to the first one.

The first thing I really hated was when you got a "perfect/critical hit" the screen flashes bright purple/white. If you are sensitive to flashing lights, it can be annoying to see that every time you're in a battle and you get at least 1 critical hit. Be prepared if you are.

Another thing was how on-the-nose a LOT of jokes and themes were, but as far as anyone is concerned, this game IS geared toward an audience on the younger side, despite being a game that is open to all ages 10+.

There wasn't much that notably took away from the game, and I must admit it has a lot of love put into it, in terms of really making it feel like a sequel to the first Costume Quest. I would say whatever qualms you have about this series (or this game in particular) put it aside, and try playing, especially for how cheap the 1&2 bundle is.) It's about 6-7 hours of content per-game I'd say, and playing it was a fun experience. It's also really easy to put down and pick back up again after a few days/weeks. I really would genuinely recommend this game to anyone who is curious about trying it, and is looking for a serious review.

Thanks for reading! I hope this helped anyone who is questioning buying it. :)
