So, I'm a huge dragon age fan. One of my oldest gaming memories is my dad sitting me down with DA2 as a little kid. And Origins is my favorite game of all time, needless to say I was hyped for Veilguard. I saw the torrent of negative reviews and figured it was just culture war ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, upon starting the game though I did somewhat see where some were coming from.

The game doesn't start on its best foot. Your first three companions aren't the most interesting and Arlathan is a boring environment. But once you get to Antiva the game really picks up, the new companions are very compelling and the starting ones get more engaging. Not to mention, combat becomes so much faster and dramatic with the revamped combat system and class trees.

The Lore reveals start off a little disappointing as well; the truth of the Blight, the Evanuris and Sola's role in their war (and his ♥♥♥♥♥♥ mullet lmao.) But once again after some time, it gets far more compelling. Nevara and their necromancy culture, the Crows and their families and the occasional fun returning character really does make me interested in knowing more. I picked Mournwatch as my origin and this is genuinely the first Dragon Age game that had me reading through the codex, I really want to learn everything I can about the faction

I'm only 19 hours in but I'm hooked, that mission where you have to pick which city to save was a really great moment and finally fully captured me. I would recommend the game but only to fans who are willing to put up with a bit of eccentricity for a little bit before it gets good.
