It gets really repetitive and boring after a certain point with not enough enemy variation to make it feel satisfying
The alien levels at the end are especially a good example of this, with repeated worm boss designs which act functionally the same
Some of the characters you unlock are also just really annoying to play compared to others and aren't fun, one in particular who only shoots bullets out of her feet. The movement tech is nice, and she was a Godsend for beating some of the worm bosses much quicker, but it was really annoying to have to switch and up and use her when you'd be forced to. Some of the mechanics you could have for some playable characters would be interesting or fun, but you never really get enough time with them to actually fully remember it, or only unlock especially late in the game once you're basically done with it
Overall it goes on for too long, with too many available characters (which you can't choose to play as and ultimately master), and ends up being a slog after the first half of the game
The amount of characters and references are at least pretty cool to see and play as for the first time when you get them

Would be nice if I could play this without a bunch of bots in every game...
