8 Alpaca Facts
Here are some alpaca facts to enlighten the world on the best animal alive:

1. Alpacas are an ancient animal! They're thought to have been domesticated more than 6,000 years ago by the Incas who used them for their soft fleece.

2. The alpaca population is growing immensely, especially within USA! Only half a century ago, the only alpacas that existed in the U.S. were in zoos, but now, there are more 250,000 and they reside in every state.

3. Alpacas are also used as a therapy animal! A well know therapy group in the USA, Pet Partners, has about 10 alpacas.

4. Baby alpacas are called "Cria!" "Cria" is a word from the Spanish language that directly translates to "Breeding."

5. Alpacas are raised for their fleece! The fleece is similar to sheep's wool, but it's warmer, less itchy, and also nonflammable.

6. Alpacas don't have hooves, but instead they have two toe pads like dogs!

7. Alpacas have a tendency to poop in the same spot! They designate areas to defecate away from where they graze in order to stay clean.

8. Alpacas typically make 3 different sounds to communicate: a hum, haw, and "orgle!" A soft hum typically means the alpaca is curious, content, worried, bored, distressed, or cautious, and a short alarm call signals to the others that one is startled or in danger. An "orgle" is made by the males during breeding.
