First Descendant is a game that takes from both Destiny 2 and Warframe by fistfulls (so expect this review to be chockfull of comparisons) without any tact nor consideration, as in the game borrows stylistic choices and progression from both games without introducing any of the QoL. Example:
Each time when you enter the game the player gets dropped into an overcrowded spawn room (yes, the hub area is instanced like an MMO game) which more often then not can make your game fail to load. To top that off in order to get anything done you have to trot around the whole hub area so you sometimes spend good 5 minutes on just commuting if you want to upgrade your character.
Compare it to Warframe where the game launches almost instantly and drops you into a remote spaceship, all of which facilities can be accessed through Escape menu
My rig can handle Helldivers 2 on Very High with stable 60 fps yet this game takes 5 minutes to load just to freeze up in the midst of "Preparing Shaders", often resulting with me having to kill the game through Task Manager and relaunch it (hopefully you have the setting "always on top" enabled as otherwise you'll have to restart the whole PC as if you were modding New Vegas).
Graphics-wise it's no better than Warframe on Destiny 2, which further confuses me on how and why the game is so badly optimised.
Gameplay can be compared to Warframe if all the movement mechanics were replaced with the snappy grappling hook. It's not a physics and momentum based grappling hook (like the ones in Titanfall 2 or Apex Legends) but rather the one you find in other games, so basically a janky snap-to-traverse-10-meters-forward kind of deal. Some of the weapons you get at the beginning have really good sounds and feedback but after the first 4 hours of gameplay I noticed the sound quality to drop in the weapons that followed.
The story is mind-boggingly stupid and frustratingly boring. I'm 11 hours in and the Good Guys haven't achieved anything. Every story beat so far is the Bad Guys gaining bigger and bigger advantage with no tension nor stakes, as the Good Guys keep just handing the McGuffins over without sense nor reason. Luckily though, unlike in Genshin Impact, the player has the option to skip every cutscene and dialog so the player isn't forced to waste the time on bad writing.
To summarise, I can see the game being your average asian mmo shooter if you haven't played Warframe, or Destiny 2 or other (actually good) looter shooter. However, if you played any of those games it's a hard avoid.
