It is a shame true Co-Op is a relatively untapped market, because A Way Out is one of the few in genre and managed to get the ball rolling again when it was released. However, despite being as influential as it is, the game itself is pretty terrible.

Prior to release A Way Out was advertised as an 'Prison Escape' game, offering you numerous options and routes to see if you and a friend had what it takes to escape from jail. It's even in the name "A Way Out (of Prison)" although as the game develops it holds a little more meaning. I was still left disheartened when I found this game wasn't what it initially appeared, but being a completely different game it was fine. Post-Prison gameplay is fine, but when the game is about 1/6th of the game, it's such a steer in a different direction that it makes you wonder why it was advertised that way to begin with.

The gameplay itself is abysmal. A collection of cheap 'minigames' utilizing far too many mechanics that the game gives you then rips away. The gunplay is terrible, the puzzles are terrible and just draw the game out, the QTEs are uninteresting and honestly more fun to fail because of the stupid ways it gets you killed.

The fun doesn't come from the game itself, but you and your partner just messing around. It's fun trolling each other, intentionally killing the other or yourself and seeing what ways you can abuse the game for extra hilarity. But that shouldn't be a goal. Players should have fun screwing around, while playing your game. Not refuse to progress because they've found out the gun has infinite ammo and shooting the roof is more engaging than continuing.

There are a bunch of shoddy minigames tossed into the already mix-mash of 'genres' the game has. Such as arcade games, weight lifting, darts, etc. Which, honestly, I weirdly like because it's just excuses to play with, or verse, your friend in various little competitions. But once again, this makes it feel like the main draw of the game, where the game itself tries to make the story the compelling part, the random crap you can get up to is infinitely more fun. Yet, if you want to see which of you can spam a button the best, or aim the best, or whatever else little game you can do, there are far, far more interesting games that do this better. Like, honestly, just boot up Pong or some flash button-masher and you'll get the same effect.

The story itself is just bad. They try a good amount of approaches and try to involve you in drama, but it's just not engaging. You've no reason to care about Vincent's Wife. They wait far too long to tell you why they want to kill Harvey and even that is super incredibly cliche. The plot-twist towards the end is a little exciting at first, but then the next half-hour of gameplay isn't good and the forced ending (technically 2, but they are basically the same) just leaves a sour taste in your mouth after the hours you likely put into the game. It's not shocking, it's just annoying and not really emotional. It hamfists a terrible conclusion in to justify some really poor story decision that barely makes sense.

The dialogue and script itself is probably the worst part. I've seen Leo and Vincent's actors in other media, and they do just fine, but in this game their tone is terrible, muddled up and sounds awful. Leo especially has some utterly terrible reads. He's supposed to be dense and not bright, sure, but so much of his dialogue is so inhuman it's The Room levels of bad. The writer's attempts at sounding cool or edgy always fall short, the flow of dialogue is horrible and their attempt at making just about every NPC you see interactive just leads to even more terrible interactions.
"Are you my doctor?" "What makes you think I'm your doctor?" "Aren't you?" "No."

You can, and most likely, will have fun playing this game. But that's because it feels like a sandbox, despite being incredibly linear. It gives you a few things in every scene to screw around with and the game is designed so horribly that you can abuse it for more fun. It being so terrible is what kind of makes it fun. I'd honestly recommend giving it a go if you can get it really cheap.

My negative review comes from how much of this game falls short. You do not get engaged. You instead laugh at the sheer stupidity and make your own fun. But that alone shouldn't justify the game. It's good because it's bad and one of the few games in it's genre. If there were more games that go for the complete Co-Op experience, this game should be left as the joke it is. Unfortunately with so few options, I'd give it a go if you're fine with a game that feels like one of those movies that's so completely awful that you kind of enjoy it in a weird way. Just make sure you play it with a friend that you can joke around with. This game tries to be serious and emotional, but it's impossible to take it that way.
