Little Witch of the Woods is a soothing and calming experience of exploring the skills of a witch and working from Apprentice to Master Witch. You play as Ellie, a young witch who is bored of school and learning and wants to get out to strengthen and develop her skills and understanding.

The main aim of the game is to create Potions and Candies, done so by using items and materials that can be gathered from the main area, and utilising them to continue exploring other areas to fill up your Encyclopaedia and support the World and NPCs. Little Witch has a gathering system like that of Stardew Valley, but includes the Potion/Candy Creation System, which uses various tools to prepare the materials, and the Cauldron to create the Potion or Candy.

The game starts with a lengthy introduction to Ellie and the story of Little Witch in the Woods, all set on a train, whilst you get use to the controls and how to interact with characters or items within the world, and you're introduced the dialog system of having chatting options, questioning options, and side-quest options. The introduction helps set up the feeling and experience of the game and provides a strong start for the player.

The game itself is very engaging, and you’re always going to feel like you’re doing something. This is through providing motivation in terms of upgrading work tools, to creating Potions/Candies for daily hand ins. Little Witch makes you feel like there is something to do, even if you do not think there is. Some gatherable items can only be gathered at certain times of the day, to interacting with NPCs within the area and getting to know their interests.

Although still in Early Access, there can be a few bugs in terms of interaction with items or gathering, however most of the game plays very well and has been a very enjoyable experience. The main story ends off after following the main quest line and some main objectives have been completed, so there is a sudden halt to the story, but you’re still able to continue playing free roam. Below is a Pros/Cons list of the game from my point of view:

Pros:
- Great Potion/Candy Creation System – although simplistic -, but includes different ways to create Potions/Candies through Cauldron Heat and Stirring options
- Great puzzle system, which is simplistic enough in terms of how to utilise potions or candies
- A so-far cute and easy-to-get-into story, but offers enough mystery to encourage you to continue and explore further
- Great art style from the locations and areas to the sprites of the characters, and includes a Date and Day/♥♥♥ht cycle
- NPCs help make the game feel alive, and offer a variety of personalities, through normal interaction to shop usage
- Clear instructions towards what to do and how to progress, and offers a menu to show progress of quests
- Quests and Side-Quests always encourage you to do something, whether it be for gathering or creating potions/candies, however, you do not feel the need to rush anything
- An easy to access Encyclopaedia system, encouraging you to write down gatherable materials and wildlife around the area, whilst holding Potion/Candy recipes
- A simplistic inventory and storage system to hold gatherable materials and crafted materials

Cons:
- English translation can be confusing at times when it comes to reading dialogue, with some mistakes in terms of words or spellings
- The Prologue is very lengthy and can be slow
- Although nap system is a good implementation, it is limited to where you can nap and for how long
- Inventory and storage system could have a “Sort” button or include options to sort inventory/storage
- There is a lack of an Autosave system for the moment, so before quitting, make sure to save
- A set controls scheme in place for Keyboard and Mouse, which can lead to hands aching due to placement of keys/controls, or dis encourage players that are not used to RPGMaker controls

Overall, I have had a positive and enjoyable experience with Little Witch of the Woods, and have completed the main story/side quests that are accessible within 8 hours of game play. I look forward to Little Witch's updates and am eager to see what they will implement and how they will improve the game.

I bought this for £20 when it was on offer, and personally, it's been worth it. This game is basically what the name says it is, to simply put it.

To extend on that, you're exploring a maze of tiles that can affect you in positive, negative, or neutral ways. You traverse through floor after floor of twisting and turning tiles to descend further into the labyrinth, coming across various types of enemies and events, all for the thrill of exploration and dungeon crawling. It's not for everyone, and you can see within the reviews, but if you enjoy just exploring and finding new things, you'd probably enjoy it.

I came across the trailer one time on Youtube, and was interested by its simplistic design - a map of tiles that you fill up once you cross the space, a slightly detailed background to show the theme of the floor with simplistic effects to show where you're at, and to top it off, minimalist music or sounds to make the floor sound eerie or soothing. The idea of having a variety of party members that come in all shapes and sizes (even a huge cat when you unlock him like holy ♥♥♥♥???) and using your newly gained knowledge to descend further down to battle stronger foes or just enjoy the thrill of exploration.

There's nothing in terms of a major story to indicate you going into the depths, it's as the description says - a labyrinth appears outside of the town, you go and explore it. The characters have a little bit of story behind them, which gives them that bit of individuality, but at the end of the day, they're all here to do the same thing.

Throughout the dungeon exploration, you can get Exploration and Battle Abilities that can support you throughout, which can be applied within Tile 03 - the Ability Station, some of which are a bit awkward in terms of their use and some can be limited in how many times you can use them, but it's all about using a strategist plan of where and when to use them, which is where a lot of other reviews mention - Yes, you are going to need a notepad/word document open to help you note down what you find. I did this during my second run of the game after dying to a fateful tile, but making notes has been beneficial to me.

During your exploration, you get to battle monsters, indicated on tiles with Black Letters and Numbers, and I really enjoy the battle system. Your party and your enemies have 4 bars - a Speed Bar (indicating their recharge and when their next turn is), a Physical and Magical Defence bar (damaged through using Physical and Magical damage) and their HP bar. During fights, you have to plan what moves to use against your enemies, depending on your weapons or spells. It's all about identifying and using these to effectively win the battle. Some weapons come with debuffs or DOTs which can aid your battles too.

Purchasing this game is all up to you though, if you like dungeon crawler games where it's all about the exploration, go for it, it'll be up your alley. It's not for everyone, and it's not making itself out to be.

Possibly one of my favourite games now.
Loving the whole "move to the beat idea", main protagonist is adorable and all of the weapons and items in game are just great.
Art style and colourful 8-bit look in game is amazing, one of my absolute favourites.
The music is just so catchy and I'm listening to it on YouTube whenever I'm not playing the game.
Modding is great, daily challenge and unlockable characters are great ideas too.

Glad I bought this in Early Access, can't wait to see how it turns out.
Like seriously, if you love great music, an 8-bit styled game and bright and colourful randomly generated dungeons, then get this.
It's so worth it, regardless on sale price or not.

If you're gonna play this, you're going to need a box of tissues next to you.
Great story, the music is so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ beautiful that I almost cried everytime I was at the Title Menu, controls were a bit meh at times, but nonetheless this game is just so beautiful.
Buy it and play it and don't stop until you finish it.
