There are many games that use the Metroidvania formula, but most of them don't use the Metroid gameplay. A Robot Named Fight not only uses the Metroidvania formula, but it also plays just like Super Metroid with Rougelike elements as well. If you've ever played Super Metroid, then it would be instantly familiar to you how the gameplay is.

The rougelike elements that are present are randomly generated maps, randomly placed power-ups, shops that grant upgrades, and perma-death. Everytime you die you start over from the beginning, which makes dying pretty devastating whenever it happens. There are unlockables that can be acquired whenever you earn achievements, which makes earning them even more worthwhile. Once you start unlocking them, then you will most likely see them in a future run. For example, later playthroughs can have special rooms that will revive you if you can reach and use them before dying.

There are many traverse upgrades that you will find to further progress into the game. There are several variations of each traverse upgrade that perform the same function, but perform differently. For example, some areas are inaccessable due to the fact that your character can't jump high enough. You may either get a double jump, or get a high jump in that run to progress further.

Permanent power-ups can be found throughout the whole map, which are similar to stat upgrades like in The Binding of Isaac. You will need to shoot different parts of the terrain to uncover them, just like in Metroid. There are also different allies that you will come across that can help you with upgrades and items if you provide them the scrap they need to make it. The allies act as the shops of the game.

The game can last around between 45 minutes to 1 hour in each playthrough, or even shorter depending on how fast you can get through the game. The game can also be played in local co-op where a friend can control an orb that can fire at enemies for you. For $13 it's an easy recommendation to anyone who loves to play Super Metroid, and anyone that loves Metroidvania games in general.
