I don't know the specific situations of the people who claim that the game is "literally unplayable" because of lag, but I have a fairly mediocre laptop and get on average 40-50 fps with a mixture of medium and low settings. So far this has not hindered me in enjoying the wonderful immersive experience that is NMS.

The game constantly blew my mind at how vast and interesting the world you explore is. People have complained about the inventory being clunky, and while it is a little annoying at first; I got used to it after an hour or two. My favorite part of the game so far are the intelligent alien NPC's. They all look so weird and awesome, and I love how when you learn a word of their language it gets translated when they speak. Flying your ship around is fun, but be warned that the game doesn't let you get extremely close to the surface while flying. It didn't upset me at all, but I know some people didn't like that.

I could talk all day about the first 7 hours I spent in No Mans Sky, but now it comes to whether or not I recommend it. First of all with the whole "people not being able to run the game at a decent fps," steam will give you a refund if you have less than 2 hours in game and it's within 2 weeks of purchase. If it runs terribly on your computer, just get a refund. Now if it does run on your computer, don't go into this game with expectations of a "space minecraft." The point of NMS is the exploration. If that's what you liked about Minecraft, you'll most likely like this game. So with that, I'll give NMS a light recommendation. Be sure to evaluate what you like to do in video games, and make sure that aligns somewhat with this one before you purchase. It's a very niche game, and I don't think all of the excessive popularity and hype has done the game any good.

I can honestly say that I would play this game for a day straight. And that's saying something, because I have a pretty low attention span. The graphics are ok, but what can you expect from an MMO. The gameplay is simple and elegant and the story and world is huge and breathtaking. This isn't Skyrim online, but is definitely an Elder Scrolls Game.
