Review Showcase
About to reach the 50 hour mark, so here's my main takeaways from the game as it stands. For some context, I am making a comparison from Inquisition over to this game, so there will be some statement relating to the former.

Pros
- Fluid combat, movement and abilities feel great
- No more garbage in my inventory that isn't worth anything, getting duplicate items just upgrades the item to the next rarity. Makes me feel like I'm spending less time doing inventory management and more time actually playing the game.
- Crafting dumbed down to just upgrading and enchanting, which means less materials I have to search for and I am okay with that.
- The story is great, does a good job at encompassing most if not all of northern Thedas into the overall plot.
- The big branching choices when it comes to both important events in the story or character development feel impactful.
- A whole lot of QOL stuff that ends up being its own list and I will not include in this review, but trust me when I say they made this game so much more fluid with every part, I never find myself neglecting a part of the game because it's annoying to deal with.
- No more consumables. I remember not really using the various potions and grenades in Inquisition besides healing potions because they just never seemed that great. Instead, now you get different effects for when you use a healing potion depending on what gear you have equipped. One less thing I have to worry about crafting all the time.
- I love all the characters. Every one of them. Inquisition had a few I tended to neglect, but I use every one in Veilguard pretty consistently. I like their stories, their banter, they are all entertaining in their own ways.

Cons
- The UI, especially when it comes to the inventory, is buggy as all get-out as of right now, it's a little frustrating to navigate your inventory when your selection gets stuck on a certain inventory spot. Scrolling through additional inventory also works maybe half the time.
- Dialogue choices could be a lot better. And by that, I mean I would like to play through the game as a not-so-nice protagonist. An anti-hero if you will. The choices in dialogue are just way too nice and honestly can be a little deceiving for what you character ACTUALLY says compared to the choice you made.
- While I enjoy the combat, I sorta wish that there was some easier way to tell that melee attacks were coming your way. There's often so much going on that I can rarely see the red or yellow marking above my head to make sure I dodge or parry an attack. This is especially true when they put you into close-quarters fights and your camera backs up against a wall. I'm not sure how 3rd-person devs keep making that mistake.
- The skill trees are fine at best. They are expansive and there's a lot of skill points that can go into them. My only big issue with it is when it comes to forming a build, when you get to late-game stuff, you often run out of skills that are impactful for you to spec into, making every level up past ~level 30, especially if you've gotten the statues for extra skill points, seem relatively worthless.
- One less active companion than Inquisition. I suppose I understand this one, the worlds are not quite as large as Inquisition was, which leaves a lot less space for that extra 3rd companion. But I liked having them, and would enjoy it even more now that some of the companions don't have particular "classes" to them, and all have unique skills that are specific to their characters.

Closing Statement
Overall, I think this game is great, and I think after a few bug fixes and some enhancements here and there, it could stand to be one of the best Dragon Age games to date. I can see myself playing this game again several times over in the coming years, trying different builds, seeking different paths, etc. I think Veilguard generally describes what Dragon Age is supposed to be as an IP for Bioware, and I really respect them for genuinely putting time and effort into the game to make it as good as it could be. While I'm saddened that there's no plans for DLC, I also respect their decision to dedicate their dev team to working on the next Mass Effect, as I am really interested to see how that turns out after my experience with this game.
