Medieval France is the most prominent European Culture to be immediately descended from The Roman Empire, hence the academic definition of French Language as a "Romance" Language, or a language literally descended from Ancient Roman Language. Literary works in Franch language are called "Roman," or the root of the English literary term "Romance" due to the fact that latin script still was still used to record the "vulgar" or "popular" latin dialect that would become the medieval French Languages, much like the holy bible for much of The Roman Catholic Church's history. In addition to it's direct cultural heritage to Roman Imperialism, French cathedrals are styled "Notre Dame" in honor of the Virgin Mary herself being consecrated as the patron saint of The Kingdom of France, an honor meant to distinguish France as the first true christian country after the fall of The Roman Empire in the eyes of The Roman Catholic church.
