Do you like 5e? Yes? Good, I don't need to say $#!+ else! Buy the game and play it and be glad that you did.

If you said no, then let me explain why that doesn't matter.
5e (Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition ruleset) is way better as a video game system than a tabletop RPG, and this game proves it. Looking at the gameplay alone there are many things that stand out from other games of the same genre. The first thing is that this game plays more like a turn-based strategy game than a true-blue CRPG when in combat, utilizing 5e's action system in a most intuitive way. There's no option to go into real-time, which would normally suck real hard... if it weren't for what I just mentioned. The combat in Baldur's Gate 3 is incredibly tactical and rewarding, with arenas feeling much better than the normally artificial feeling scenery of chest high walls and cover that doesn't make any damn sense. Every set piece fits narratively, and this fact makes discovering certain solutions to more puzzling fights that much more satisfying. Whether it's using the high ground to your advantage, or lighting up a grease trap in a doorway or tight corridor, running up to stuff and attacking it (while sometimes seems more effective) is not the only solution like it can sometimes feel when you're sitting at the table wondering whether or not your character's features are ever going to be useful. The environment being a factor in every combat is probably the biggest factor that sets this apart from the tabletop game.

If you still need convincing, then we can take a step away from the (much better than it's IRL counterpart) gameplay and look to the real reason people play CRPGs to begin with, the story and characters. The stakes are pretty damn high from the moment you hit "new game" and just continue to grow as you continue to progress through the various quests and Main Story scenarios. Your companions will sometimes be at odds with each other but come together to reach their common goal. Each of their personal goals will develop in a natural way *with* the main story (none of them feel like their side $#!+ is actually unimportant) so you don't feel like your companion quests are just running errands that just eventually lead to romance somehow. Not to mention that the world itself is very true to it's source material- that being: Faerun/The Forgotten Realms- with various races and factions being properly represented with no holds barred. The focus on the Sword Coast- while it does feel a bit overused- is expected in a Baldur's Gate game and is done brilliantly, making veterans feel right at home and drawing in new players with ease due to the more-than-competent world building. The scenery is diverse, ranging from the normal lush, green, forests we see in fantasy all of the time to the expansive and molten rivers of the underdark. There are others that I will not mention for fear of spoiling too much, but understand that the variance is there. This game has something for everyone and all that you need to do is give it a good 5 minutes, which will turn into hours, which will turn into days. Oh, and did I mention that there's multiplayer?

TL;DR the changes made to accommodate a video game adaptation of Dungeons and Dragons' 5th edition ruleset, as well as the incredible writing and visuals make Baldur's Gate 3 an instant pickup for anyone that wants some ridiculously good CRPG writing with tactical turn-based strategy combat. It's well worth any price it's at. Full, complete game right out of the gate. A much needed change to the triple A formula from a non-triple A company.

If I was writing this review a year after release instead of current year, I'd be recommending it instead of recommending against it. The gameplay is nothing short of amazing, with every character and mastermind having their own unique style and strategy. The objectives for the survivors are simple but just complex enough to make the game interesting to play for hours at a time; and unleashing your tyrant as the mastermind with an army of BOWs at your back to combat the survivor team is super satisfying and cinematic in a way that only Resident Evil can be. BUT! The game was killed by a plethora of things that can only be described as a damn shame. Probably one of the biggest L's I've seen since Evolve. The game was disregarded by a lot of Resident Evil fans because it wasn't PVE, which is something that I think will never stop sucking. I really think people should be more willing to give the RE side-projects a shot. But that's not all that killed the game. Cheaters took over like crazy due to an anticheat system that did not get updated or patched enough, and a bad netcode that came from peer-to-peer connectivity. Why on Earth Capcom, one of the biggest companies in gaming didn't set up an asymmetrical multiplayer game with dedicated servers is beyond me. And THAT'S NOT ALL! The balancing and MMR in the game are nonexistent. Brand new Masterminds can get put up against maxed out survivors and get absolutely trounced because they have no perks or augmentations to make sure that their creatures can stay alive or deal damage. This goes both ways as well, with brand new survivors getting put up against Masterminds that have maxed out perks and crazy-strong card decks full of stuff that new Masterminds don't have access to without gaining levels; meaning that those survivors can't stay alive long enough to push their abilities or draw their weapons. The lack of a true MMR/ELO system leads to more imbalanced matches later in the game's life. Which is why I would say this game did so well on arrival and then flubbed once the hype died down; because even though the game didn't have the same hype the the upcoming RE4 remake has for example, there were still fans of the game's genre as well as franchise that were looking forward to it. Pulling in people from the DBD, Friday the 13th, etc. fanbases as well as existing Resident Evil fans that were skeptical but overall wanted to at least give the game a shot. And the game was glorious for the first couple of months. Everyone was relatively close to each other in level and strategies were still being discovered. And even after the first month when they added a new survivor (Jill Valentine) and new Mastermind (Nicholai w/ Nemesis) the game was still going pretty strong. But then the updates dropped dead with the game, and unfortunately- unlike the zombies you can control- I don't think it'll be getting back up any time soon. Maybe if people are satisfied with RE4 remake and we get a possible remake of Outbreak or Code Veronica we'll get some kind of operation health for this game, but even that seems unlikely...

Overall/TL;DR
Resistance is a game that was good at it's launch and could have been so much better. But got stale quickly to fans of the game and fell victim to a plethora of problems that could have been alleviated by some micromanagement by a dedicated Resistance team at Capcom watching this game and improving it when needed. The roadmap was a step in the right direction, but the unfortunate reality is that it doesn't matter how good of a foundation you have; if just a couple of pillars are put in the wrong place, everything will come crashing down.

If this game had consistent support from Capcom it'd be a 10/10 easily. It would blow every other 4v1 game out of the water in an instant, no contest. But because it is literally not a game anymore I can't even give it a rating, but the lack of balance and overall amount of cheaters that you'd probably face puts it at a ballpark estimate of a 2/10. You might get one good game out of 50, but I wouldn't put money on it...

Shame that this game might get review bombed for not being some huge project like an Outbreak remake (because it's not a huge game, it's a side project that has a smaller team working on it) or some such. But I digress...

Gameplay: It's RE engine PVP. It's surprisingly good for how janky that sounds... But there is still jank. Tank controls have gone the way of the dodo so you can do things like strafe and sprint towards the camera. They have also added a dodge mechanic to try to alleviate some of the stiltedness that is normally in these games, however there's no invincibility frames on the dodge without taking a perk to acquire it, which can lead to some often frustrating moments when dealing with creatures. And because you can't fire a ranged weapon without aiming, most (if not all) characters have some form of close range ability that can get people off of you. But unless your name is Leon you don't really want to get up close anyways, because being next to someone when they die could spell disaster if you're on a killstreak. The creature side of gameplay is also pretty janky, however because it can be difficult to play against these hulking masses of melee damage, you'll probably see a lot of success as long as you exercise some patience while playing as a creature. Basically as long as you have a virus capsule (purple pickups that spawn on the map) you will spawn as a tier 2 or higher creature when you die. If you don't have anything upon death, you turn into an explodey mold monster. Each creature, much like each human, has their own skills and abilities that they can use to dish out damage. However, creatures really want to get up in the humans' grill so they can claim their kills as fast as they can before expiring. The overall ebb and flow of gameplay is trying to get as many kills as you can while in your human form, and then chasing after your revenge target when they kill you once you become a creature. It's incredibly fast-paced and twitchy and feels pretty good to play even though it's kinda hard to watch sometimes. It's overall pretty fluid after you get used to it. Just don't be surprised if the jank rears its ugly head once in a while to throw you off your game.

Monetization
Coming at this from an objective standpoint (using subjective language), the battle pass and monetization are not good compared to something like Apex Legends or Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodhunt, or even something akin to Multiversus. What you get in the battle pass doesn't pay for itself because there is no premium currency. Which means that when you make a premium purchase, it is only for real money. There is a free currency in the game that is strictly for leveling up and cosmetics. So don't expect anything crazy worthwhile on the battle pass front. And certainly don't expect to get future battle passes for free if the game lives that long.

Overall/TL;DR
They game feels good to play, the weird overlay on the graphics looks kinda weird because it gives the game a comic-book(?) style look that I think is meant to help with rendering 6 player models and particle effects simultaneously. The back and forth gameplay style of a Free-For-All style game isn't terrible in the slightest. The only things the game really needs are more game-modes (something PvPvE based would be best) and characters/playable creatures to facilitate the new game-modes. It'd be cool to see some heroes and villains from the older games (Barry, Sheva, Wesker) get added in for the arcadey Resident Evil shenannagins.

The game gets a solid 7/10. For what it does at the moment, the game does it just about as well as any other third person shooter, but it lacks the variety in maps and game modes that something like "Gears of War" offers. While it's good that they delayed the game to polish it and add in some of the other character progression stuff, I think content is gonna be what saves this game; because the fanbase is gonna go absolutely f***ing ballistic if they don't see something remotely PVE related within the decade.

The classic juggle fighter now on PC offers not only the most characters in any 2D Mortal Kombat (Excluding X), but it also offers an excellent story, gameplay, and movesets that will make lovers of the original have a fangasm. efinately recommend, but do not use the keyboard controls, they are awful.
