I wasn't sure I was going to like this game when I got it. Sure, the pitch of it being "anime mario party" and being a new addition to the games I could play with all my friends was nice, but I wasn't entirely sure it was for me. 257 hours and a year later, and I couldn't be happier that I gave it a genuine try. Some of the most fun I've had with an online multiplayer game.

You WILL rage, you WILL triumph, you will pull off the zaniest plays, but one things remains true. All is the will of the dice. Believe in RNGsus and he shall deliver the 6s unto you.

Game gave me a crazy purple-haired doctor waifu. 10/10, would play again.

TL;DR at the bottom

You've seen your favourite YouTubers play it, you've heard your friends talk about it, you've read websites' moral outrage pieces about it, it's none other than HuniePop!

At it's core, HuniePop is two things, a decent dating sim and an insanely challenging and fun match-3 game, even more so if you go for the game's achievements as they force you to approach the game from a different angle.

On the Dating sim part, you walk around your town, flirting with all the girls, giving them gifts, food, drinks, answering their questions and asking them out on dates. It's not particularly deep, but the full voice acting makes it really engaging(if you dislike the voice acting, there's a "beep" voice setting that makes all the characters talk à-la early Phoenix Wright games).

Now, for the match-3 part...it's amazing. That's really the only way I can summarise it. As opposed to most match-3 where you can only move any piece up, down, left or right by 1 space, this game throws that out the window to allow for more strategy. Instead, you can take any token and move it anywhere along the row or column that it's in. This allows you to play more strategically.

Say you want to move a token to make a 3 match by moving it the right. You COULD do that, but say at the end of the row, there's also a token you need to move all the way to the left to set up another move after this one. You can take that token and move it all the way to the left, while moving the token for the match-3 into place, effectively making the match-3 and setting up your next move, all with only one move (of course, to move a token like this, a match must be made somewhere on the board, else the token will just snap back to where it was).

The goal of the match-3 game is to reach a certain score before running out of moves. Doing so will result in a successful date, and failing to do so will reward you with snark or anger from the girl and a failed date. Now, it's also not just that simple. There's a few things that can change the outcome. The first is the Broken Heart token. Just like the other tokens, this token can make match-3 or higher matches. However, these are the only tokens you won't want to match. Matching them removes a certain percentage of your current score (each piece = 12%, and each piece in the match multiplying the %. i.e. match-3=46%). You can however remove these pieces safely or reduce the percentage. Let's discuss reducing the percentage first.

There are traits that you can upgrade with Hunie (earned by talking to the girls/giving them gifts/drinks) that affect how your dates will go. You can increase any of the 4 main stats (Flirtation, Talent, Romance and Sexuality) which will cause matches of those tokens to give more points, Passion, which will increase your max passion level when matching heart shaped tokens (which acts as a point multiplier), sensitivity, which reduces the percentage that broken hearts remove from your score when matched, Charisma which increases the points you get from matches overall and luck which increases how often you'll get a power token (causes the match you use it in to generate more points). If you use these wisely, as each girl likes a different stat more than the others (and one she likes the least), you can perform well in the match-3 games.

Finally, there are date gifts, items you can give the girls during the dates that change the date dynamic or cause some sort of effect on the board. One example of each would be the Leopard Print Pumps that cause any match-4 or higher to grant an additional move or the Stuffed Bear that changes every Broken Heart token on the board into a passion token. Of course, you can't just use these items whenever. There's a another mechanic in place that regulates them and that would be sentiment. Get enough sentiment by matching sentiment tokens (shaped like tears) and you can use a date gift, each having a different sentiment value.

Now, as for the game's other part...the nudity. While the Steam version comes censored by default, you can uncensor it easily by following the instructions from the developer himself in this thread from the game's discussion forum:
http://gtm.steamproxy.vip/app/339800/discussions/0/616198900649668367/

Now, let's go over some other elements of the game.

The music is really well done. They always fit the locations where they play. Be it the park, a casino or a water park, they're all nice to listen to. My ONLY qualm with the music is that you can hear the point where the music loops in certain tracks.

The visuals are very appealing (and I don't just mean the bedroom scenes). All the environments are well designed and really put you into the location. The HUD and menus are also very appealing to the eye, as they never seem too cluttered or hard to navigate. Finally, the girls. Well, that's probably gonna be subjective to you ;)

The controls are pretty much what you'd expect. Nothing huge. Just use your mouse (or trackpad) to navigate the menus and move the tokens during the dates.

The replayability of the game certainly exists. With all the different date items combinations you can attempt, as well as the achievements that challenge you to play the game differently, the game has a lot of replayability. The end game has some replayability issues as the final end game difficulty dates mainly just require you to abuse the most useful item in the game to finish it, but otherwise, replayability is not an issue with this game.

Now, a few minor complaints.

Sometimes during dates, you'll complete a match with a Borken Heart token underneath the cleared tokens and two Broken Hearts will spawn from the top, causing a Broken heart match that was largely out of your control. It's rare enough, but it's still frustrating when it happens.

The luck trait is very subjective in how good it is. Personally, if I could redo my 100% profile, I would undo maxing it as a maxed luck stat gives 100% power token from a 5-match, 80% from a 4-match and a 20% chance from a 3-match. I personally dislike having the 3-match with a chance of spawning a power token. It can screw you over sometimes if you're trying to line up a match. I would personally cap the luck stat off at 5-match 100% and 4-match 50% (which is the third upgrade) if I were to do another 100% profile.

Going for 100%, you have to ask every girl for all their info. However, you can't ask them directly. You have to wait for them to ask you if there's anything you want to ask. This can be particularly frustrating sometimes if you're only missing one piece of info for 1 girl and the game won't let you ask about it. However, this will only really be an issue if you go for 100%.

However, with everything said and done, I cannot recommend this game enough. If you want a good dating sim with a match-3 puzzle system that's deeper than most, this game is definitely for you.

Now, for a TL;DR:

Pros:
-A deep match-3 system
-Music
-Visuals
-Controls
-Replayability

♥♥♥♥:
-Some tracks can be heard looping
-Broken Hearts will sometimes screw you over when it's not your fault
-The Luck trait should be upgraded with caution
-100%'ing all girls info can take a while

Very Recommended.
Jessie best girl. Fight me.

SGAS 2017 update: Still as fun as ever. Open it every once in a while to enjoy the fun match-3 puzzles. Nominated for "No Apoligies", because I have none for playing this game.

I've been with this game since it launched into the stages of Open Beta Testing with OGP, so around 5 years now. And over that time, I've watched the game evolve and flourish. Yes, there's been some missteps, but we're here, and the game is at it's best, the best it's been in a long time.

For starters, our current hosts, Z8Games, have given players the most stuff our of all three publishers (OGPlanet and WeMadeUSA being the other two). Z8Games regularly gives out chances to get style packages (let's you completely style out a hero regardless of style level restrictions. It also let's you choose to have the female gender). We also just today had a perm hero scroll in the attendance calendar, which gives a player a random permanent hero!

We also had a large game changing update recently that made the game a lot more newbie friendly. the first quest you do now gives you a scroll that lets you choose a permanenet hero of CHOICE out of a selection of heroes. Master modes of dungeons ALSO now give perm hero scrolls as drops, which means even more chances at free permanent heroes!

Now, onto the part I'm sure you're wondering about. Is the game pay2win? With the current state of the game, I can honestly say it is not. With all the free stuff being given, a free player can get a lot of permanent stuff, as well as GOOD permanent stuff. I myself have gotten 18 free permanent heroes, and then paid for one (a premium, only available with cash). Now, while premiums and rares might only be available through cash, that doesn't make the game pay2win. Some of them are outright bad, and some of the better ones have a free hero that's as good as that rare or premium hero, so you can still compete.

All that said, I give this game my full seal of approval. I say give the game a shot. If you don't like it, chances are it just wasn't meant for you. After all, not all fighting games appeal to everyone. However, be considerate of others if you review the game. Even if you didn't enjoy it, others might as well.
