Intelligence affords one the advanced ability to override their evolutionary imperatives. One such imperative is the need to belong - to be a part of a bigger group - an identity. The identity is expressed by fashioning yourselves a certain way, consistent with the rest of the group, as a deserved token of coolness or edginess. This often paradoxically results in a high level of cringe to the intelligent observer.
