How I feel about SULFUR: SotG Jan 2025. On the fence? READ THIS!

Hello! I felt good about the initial style of SULFUR. It reminded me a lot of one of my favorite - yet abandoned - hidden gem dungeon crawlers: DELVER. As someone whose favorite, genres are roguelike/lites, SULFUR is an absolute craving-itcher. I'm talking to you-- Enter the Gungeon; Brutal Orchestra; and Nuclear Throne fans!

This game is far from finished, but let me share my experiences: positive and negative.
---
What I liked:

- An addictive gameplay loop for each individual dungeon.

- Balancing what to pack. Deciding if I should take or toss what'll keep me alive; bolster my weapons; make me ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ rich; or cool gear.

- Customization and synergies. You've got tons of options for your guns! You want explosive buckshot for your shotgun? How about a sniper rifle that can shoot lava? Oh, you wanted it to chamber 9mm instead? Bouncing taser rounds? All possible.

- Resource management (risk:reward). Yes, there are recipes, but many single ingredients have multiple uses: some better than others. A can of meat can become and explosive too! You also need to remember to repair you gear with certain items or from vendors. Keeping your eye on ammo doesn't hurt either, but you can stock up a lot in mid to late game.

- Secrets (:

===

Common complaints and what needs fixing:

- I see a lot of comments about melee type enemies, but you can learn how to kite them in a lot of cases (also doesn't hurt to simply gain some distance from them). I feel for you my fellow knife cultist haters..

- "Value" items don't have a use-case as of now beyond selling them. I think they'll have a use later on in development, but they can take up some inventory space. Choose wisely.

- Clipping can get INCREDIBLY ANNOYING: especially when surfacing from a swim or landing in an odd spot. It'll get patched soon enough..

- I spoke about replay value, but admittedly-- I could've reached the current end-game sooner if I wasn't stuffing all inventories with items. That being said, I'm craving for more dungeons!

THIS GAME IS FUN! Just get it! What else are you playing right now? Exactly.

Lovely little game that wasn't very long, but very relaxing. I wouldn't consider it worth $20.00, but it was certainly one of the better games of this year.

This is another one of those "I wanted to love this game" reviews, but give me a second to explain why.

I've gone through the positive and negative reviews, and this is what I think to be true:

Positives:
- Good Visuals
- Good Soundtrack
- Somewhat Interesting Story
- Fun Mechanics

Negatives:
+ Slow Pacing
- One of the tags for this game is "Fast-Paced," but I didn't feel that this was fast paced at all. The movement feels slow even when wall running, and I think they misrepresent how fast you travel in the display video.

+ Clunky Movement
- I feel that movement is everything in a platforming game, and I didn't feel like the movement was fluid. This was an issue that disappointed me even in the demo.

+ Bad Direction
- While there are plenty of useful indicators in the game, I feel that there isn't always a clear direction for moving forward. There are a lot of needless platforms that only serve to confuse you. Sometimes you can skip platforming segments by grappling ahead.

Final Thoughts:
I didn't have an issue with the game's difficulty at all. My main issue was the movement itself: it's too slow and boring in my opinion. The Cybervoid was especially boring and slow, and the main character doesn't seem excited to be there either through dialogue. At one point there's a puzzle that feels so out of place, and it was at this point that I realized I wasn't excited to go back to the main scheme of things either. It's possible that there are upgrades for movement later in the game, but I strongly prefer upgradeable combat over speed in a game like this. I think I'll refund this if I still can.

It is what it is. What you see is what you get. There's just one issue.. Just one..

There is absolutely nothing stopping me from moving forward while holding 2 spiked maces in order to beat the ever living ♥♥♥♥ out of the block heads.

Sure, I haven't even played one hour of this game, but you know what? I don't see myself having to do much else besides swinging my arms back and forth for the rest of it.

I think it might be time for a refund..

As beautiful and mystical as Subnautica is, there are a few things I can not overlook..

Besides the Seamoth, the Cyclops and Prawn suit are incredibly slow and annoying to maneuver. The Cyclops has a faster speed setting, but you can only use it for about 5 seconds before it overheats. The Prawn suit's grapple hook is, again, way too annoying to maneuver.

I have no issues with the creatures within Subnautica (including the leviathans). However, when my Cyclops gets stuck between two measly rocks for the 13th time, I can't express how frustrating it is to try and push myself free while my Ocean Tuba is getting a beat down from a glow in the dark hammer head that can travel through the solid terrain that I can not.

Lastly, and hear me out on this, but why does your water meter drain so fast? I got giant fungus planted in my undersea porch, I'm slapping whoopee cushions filled with water on my work bench, and I got an entire nuclear powered filter that makes 2 bottles of water per 7 minutes ( of which is waaaay too ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ long to wait for). Think about how it compares to how fast you can whip out your flaming knife and stab a living boomerang to get food. So I drink the 2 water bottles I've been waiting 7 minutes for, and within the next 2 minutes my water is back down to 12%. ???

Story/Lore? - Great

Concept? - Fascinating

Graphics? - Beautiful

Exploration? - Speed. This. ♥♥♥♥. Up. We got modules people!

This is a faster, less complex, and rather boring FPS version of Dead by Daylight.. Let me give it to you straight: It's just chaos and has no strategy whatsoever.

I looked at this game from the store page and thought it was Dead by Daylight with a ranged boost for both the killer and survivors, and thought this version would give it that extra bit of action that I was looking for. The game goes a little like this:

-Collect your secondary power from a crate: check.
-Collect ammo: check.
-Kill idle drones that will never activate: check.
-Get your fill of blood: check.
-Deposit: check.
-Where is the killer? Running around somewhere I guess..
-Do I just keep collecting blood? I guess so..
-Wow, I am just doing the same thing over again and again..

IT DOESN'T FEEL REWARDING AT ALL!
