It's a common technique chained with fake challenges when you drive parallel to the play (often backwards towards your defensive half) to shadow or mirror your opponent's control play. Fakes and shadow defense are used to force possession transfer so that you can control the ball and create offense. The best defense is a good offense, remember? My primary issue with this player's gameplay was that they were positioning too deep as a 2nd man and giving their opponents too much space during their shadow defense. In their case, they were faking and shadowing no one because of how removed they were from the play. I wanted them to play closer, which will help them "sell" their defensive techniques while being a mechanical stress for them as well. I also covered several play options based around their desired spacing. If they wanted to shadow close to the play, then they can play for a quick-turn cut on the ball or a backflip challenge. If they wanted to shadow farther away from the play (deep), then they can pair that with a goal line save. Both spacing techniques will cause their opponent to panic, whether it's due to them not knowing when they're going to challenge or from the huge amount of space they're given, which then puts a lot of stress on their mechanics. Above all, though, I wanted this player to meet me in the middle and experiment with all the options, to turn on the ball, to double or triple fake, and to shadow close and far. Because of how situational Rocket League is, it's important for them to be comfortable playing a variety of options, in and outside their playstyle and mechanical comfort zones.
