Hands down favorite game I've played this year thus far. Great visually, really fun tech, and a nice sense of humor in some places. Devs are great, and I look forward to what they have in store for the future.

Cannot recommend this game more!

Do you like space? Exploration? Mystery? A feeling of existential dread and constant impending doom? If you answered yes to any of these, this game is perfect for you!

This game is one of the best I've played in a while, and I wish there was some way I could make myself forget all that I have seen in playing it so I could pick it up and experience all over again. I honestly don't want to describe specifics in this game, as I think if you go in blind it'll be for the best. Just take my word for it that it is truly amazing, and one of the best games of the past few years.

Also, the score is incredible.

Give it a try, and explore the oddities of the cosmos!

I really do wish there was an option to place an opinion on a game as "mixed" rather than being confined to a simple "yes" or "no" format when commenting upon my thoughts of a game. To quickly summarize my thoughts: this game is a mixed bag; if you like Star Wars, Souls-likes, and adventure games you'll probably like this game, and I somewhat recommend it to you. My feelings are generally more positive than negative, so I'd give it a shot. (A summary of my thoughts is found in the last paragraph).

Now, to give context, I'm not exactly the most experienced when it comes to Souls-likes. I've played some of the first Dark Souls, but generally I find the gameplay to not really mesh with my interests. However, when I saw this on sale during the Steam Winter Sale (for a whopping 17% off; why that percentage is beyond me) I decided to take a chance on it and put some of my overtime wages towards it. And, as far as I can tell, this is a pretty solid entry-point for that genre. Combat is fascinating with parrying and dodging and executing combos. This turned out to be a pleasant, yet at many times frustrating, turn for the franchise.

The story itself is serviceable. It's fine. Just fine. It's compelling enough to keep me playing, which, I suppose, is what really matters. However, focusing on finer details, I feel like many of the characters feel rushed or not really developed well. Some are, but a lot of the plot just feels... off to me. I would go further into detail, but for the sake of spoilers I'll refrain from doing so.

As far as actual gameplay goes, I'll admit, it's quite fun. The progression feels great and much of the actual exploration reminded me of one of my favorite games, Metroid Prime, which was "a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one." However, as you get into combat, things become farm more mixed. Combat can be extremely fun, especially against some more challenging units. The gratification you feel from executing a battle perfectly is great! However, there are some areas of the game that just feel downright unfair in terms of encounters and/or enemy movesets. Sure, the game is meant to be hard, but there are so many times where you can seem to just be wombo-comboed into oblivion. There's a fine difference between challenge and unfairness, and this game likes to take some steps over that line every now and again.

Some of this may be due to my playthrough being on one of the harder settings, however I cannot imagine NOT playing on this setting, as I feel that the hardest difficulty would only exaggerate my previous issues, and any lower difficulty would only make the AI worse than it is.

To put it simply, for much of the game, the AI is a joke. It can break way more often than I'd hope, and even when it IS working it is extremely simplistic in how it acts. Later in the game you can fall prey to some bounty hunter attacks, and I cannot even count how many times they've bugged out or have simply just walked off of cliffs. And these guys are mini-bosses! Regular grunt units can be even worse. There's one point towards the games third act where you obtain a final upgrade for your lightsaber, and in order to test it out, the game presents what are basically two rooms of enemies to try the ability out on. The enemies in one of the rooms just don't work. Half of them just stand there and take my abuse, not reacting at all.

This is probably one of the most frustrating things about the game. The questionable AI feel unfinished; at some times they prove a real challenge, other times they prove to be nearly impossible, and other times they basically end up handling themselves. They are absent-minded savants.

So what redeems this game? Well, my aforementioned appraisal of how the combat can SOMETIMES feel on top of it being one of the more interesting pieces of Star Wars media gives it that edge. Exploration is fun, the progression is pretty cool, and the sense of scale in some places is just great. The art direction is well done, and the soundtrack is also really great, with many tracks that seem to fit right in with some of William's pieces in the films. However, given many of my negative viewpoints, like the sometimes downright broken AI, cheap encounters, and even cheaper boss fights, I would potentially hold off on buying it for a bit. It's clear that a lot of thought and care went into this game, so, if you like Star Wars and some challenge, I'd recommend it. I'd recommend it a whole lot more if you could pick it up on sale or something.

Still a better story than Attack of the Clones/10
