solid tactical cover shooter with good gunplay and stealth, competent ai and a really well done campaign. the squadmates are well voice acted and likeable characters. Special shout out to the weapon customization which had to have been the most in depth out there when this game released. Back when Ubisoft knew wtf they were doing...

unfortunately, time hasnt been kind to this one. The antequated gameplay systems and graphics make it a chore to play. In dire need of a remake.

Game breaking bug in tlad at the end of the mission collectors item, the game always crashes to desktop when exiting the building. Found reports of people having this issue back in 2011. You're a 20 billion dollar company, fix it you lazy pricks.

ludonarrative dissonance - the game

it's fun though, the harry potter universe is well realized.

After refunding the game on release day because of the performance issues and leaving a negative review, I gave it another chance a few weeks later when it went on sale and I gotta say: I am glad I did and I dont think the game deserves all the hate. I have finished the game on normal, so here is my updated review.

The initial performance issues are gone for me and although it is still demanding, callisto protocol runs well now. The performance demand is justified I feel, because the game looks absolutly stunning. Certainly a technical achievement in the looks department.

Now to the games biggest mistake: The way the melee combat system is presented to the player. The melee system is a unique one in this genre and takes time getting used to but a soon as you get your first ranged option u can basically stop relying on it. The gameplay then becomes much more simmliar to dead space or resident evil. It is my strong believe that it was thought up to be a backup system to the ranged combat, in case something comes to close but that is not how it is presented. Because you get the melee weapon first and have no other option at the beginning of the game, a lot of people (including game journalists) seem to think that callisto protocoll is supposed to be some kind of brawler and I dont believe that is how it was designed.

Once I've came to grips with the combat, the game really clicked for me. Grim enviroments, tense gameplay sections and an intriguing story made it the next-gen dead space experience I was craving and by the end I was loving it. This the persepective of a sci-fi horror fan, starved for content though.

If you wanted to love this game, I'd say give it another shot.

Also dont forget that Glen Schofield was begged by fans for years to make another dead space like game and when he did, he got nothing but ♥♥♥♥ for it. I wonder how he feels (and his team of couse)

I skipped this back in the day because the new direction rubbed me the wrong way. This spooktober, I finally decided to play it since everybody is raving about this game. I shouldn't have bothered, I think RE4 is outright bad. The writing and characters that are being held up as oh so memerable are of the over the top, cheesy, RE standard kind, that you can find in any game of the series. But that is the least of this games problems:

-the graphics look horrible, everything is a brown mush
-menus and interfaces are straight up broken with MKB
-badly ported controls
-enemy AI is braindead
-a big part of the game is an escort mission for an equally as braindead AI companion
-loads of beginners traps
-instant failstate QTEs during cutscenes, one of which causes a gamebraking bug
-QTEs during gameplay, all the bossfights are QTE sessions
-clipping issues (enemies can go out of bounds or hit you through solid objects)

the level layouts, exploration, weapon upgrade system and loot system are the
only real positives for me.

If you didnt play this until now, skip it. You're not missing anything.

good clean familiy fun for all ages

when its not currently crashing or breaking in some way, its as good as people say

the ending just blew my ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ mind. literal chills. valve is back baby
