As is I highly encourage people to avoid this game, at least for the time being. There are several gameplay and technical related issues that cause poor performance, the graphical fidelity is somewhat lackluster, and the control scheme is extremely questionable on both controller and mouse/keyboard. Combat feels clunky partly because of the system itself and partially because the game has this weird mechanic that queues up input, for example if you push the jump key just after the apex of the jump when your character hits the ground they'll jump again without any additional input. There are a number of features that lack polish as though the game weren't play-tested, the introductory fight is unnecessarily long, and the sword arts lock you into long animations that are counterintuitive to action-oriented combat. If you're interested in the game or the Sword Art IP then please go check out a video of the gameplay before you decide to commit a purchase or perhaps wait on a few updates to improve performance from the developer.

As for those reviewers who are posting about game freezes and crashes in my hour of gameplay I had nothing that prevented me from playing, however there were noticeable frame drops and moments where the game ran sluggishly. My experience was on a GTX 1080 and an Intel I7-7700K with the game installed to an SSD and 32GB of RAM so I expected smooth performance at the very least on medium settings.

For those leaving early positive reviews largely in part due to being fans of the SAO franchise or as a counter to the negative reviews, I'd like to remind you that this is a full price, $60 title. For the same price you could experience a number of other games that offer significantly better performance and gameplay and for this reason I feel you should stay away.

TL;DR: Watch some videos of the game before you decide to buy or wait for an eventual Steam sale/updates from the dev, you can safely avoid this game for the time being.

It seems like everyone, at some point, had a Nexon game as a guilty pleasure. Vindictus, up until the latest update, was mine. While this game has a fairly satisfying combat system built within the framework of an MMO that has yet to be replicated, I absolutely cannot recommend this game. They've recently added a "fatigue" system that limits the length of time per day you can spend playing, which of course can be circumvented by purchasing fatigue reduction for cash. This essentially means you can only complete a handful of quests per day before you stop receiving any rewards or progression. Nexon has always had a reputation for flagrant money pandering across all their games, selling cosmetics or boosts for fairly ludicrous prices, and this practice is no exception. What's sad is the gameplay can be quite enjoyable, unfortunately I feel that this update will likely be the final nail in the proverbial coffin for Vindictus's already dying playerbase. For those looking for prospective action-oriented MMOs I'd encourage you to check out Phantasy Star Online 2 or, at the very least, look at something besides Vindictus as Nexon is determined to run a great game into the ground.

This game appears to have been abandoned, I highly encourage anyone sifting through games in the store and steam sales to stay away from this one. It's cute but ultimately shallow and broken.

Unfortunately despite numerous updates I would still encourage buyers to stay away, particularly those interested in exploring the multiplayer. While the state of the game is slightly improved from a few months ago there are still numerous bugs and issues preventing full enjoyment of the game. There are still some strange inventory glitches, occasionally upon entering an area or sleeping you'll fall through the world and be forced to restart the game, certain BGMs (in particular the one that plays while taming a magnus) will repeat indefinitely, and you'll get stuck forever performing certain animations. While several of these bugs are certainly amusing, the most recent one we encountered caused us to get stuck in an animation while clearing the fish from our underwater farm and we were forced to either restart and potentially lose progress or leave the game running for several minutes for our characters to faint from exhaustion and be forced to leave the area (at this time the in-game clock continued to run but all menus, including the esc menu, were inaccessible.

In conclusion, again, I would advise potential buyers to refrain from purchasing for some time to come. Though conceptually the game is great and the art assets are cute and well done the rest of the game lacks polish, bugs make the single player experience frustrating while the multiplayer remains nearly unplayable.

Original Review
-------------------
As is I would encourage potential buyers to stay away from this game for a month or two and wait to see the developer response to the numerous bugs and issues with multiplayer.

We picked up this game on release date for $18 and attempted to play co-op, the multiplayer is currently a disfunctional mess. As far as I can tell the host can progress the game and interact with NPCs relatively normally, the issue is those who join can't see NPCs or progress their quests/receive quest rewards, many of which are integral to the beginning of the game to advance at all. Combat seems kinda stale at a glance and there are some strange issues with sound and graphics settings upon opening the game and loading a save file (for those who've decided to purchase I strongly recommend turning your volume down lest the intro dragon roar blow your eardrums out). There are also several reported issues with the stats of your tamed magnus going wonky on evolution or after taming as well as some features missing with inventory management and stack splitting.

It's definitely an interesting concept and I can't wait to pick it up and play it for real assuming the developers step up and iron out the problems many are facing, I'll update this review after some time has elapsed but otherwise I'd recommend potential buyers to hold off for now.
