Early Access Review
The Forest is a really fun survival/horror game... when you get past the bugs that it currently has. But, this is forgiveable, as it is an Early Access title.

As you probably know, it starts you off on an island, shortly after a plane crash has taken place. Your son (the kid in the plane sitting beside you), is captured by a native of the island. You, well, you're surviving now. There are no missions that take place, all for you to do is survive the inhabitants of the island, and the conditions that come along with weather, bacteria, body temperature, and other various survival elements. These, even though the game is still in a very early stage, are incorporated well into the game, and give more of a survival vibe off. The A.I. as they stand now, are buggy and sometimes hard to kill due to the bugs. There are easy ways to kill the mutants/natives, such as taking out your lighter, shooting a flare gun, and making a fireball that burns them. The flare gun fire ball thingy, stuns the enemies and they cannot move/attack, instead, they burn to death. Thus, making easy kills. Although, if you do not have one, the cannibals may serve as quite a challenge. Hand to hand combat with these fiends is quite risky, and often deadly when they are in groups (usually of which, they are). I have died more from bugs in the game, than the NPC's themselves, though.

The crafting/building mechanics in the game are quite well done too, even in the early stages of the game. You can build your own custom structures with regular walls, spike walls, doorways, windows, etc. Or, you can just build the preset buildings, such as the wooden cabin, or the hunting shelter. I, myself, mixed the two together to create what I called, "The Fortress of Solitude". I wish I could have spent more time with my creation, but, I was killed by an unfortunate bug in the game which sends you flying when you hit a corpse. I was quite dissapointed when I had lost all the work I had done, but, it is to be expected in a Early Access game. The effigies are structures that are compilations of human remains; legs, arms, and heads are used in these. You can light them on fire too, making a somewhat disturbing sight. I believe these effigies scare the enemies away, by combining the light source (in which they are scared of), and the body parts of the other members of their tribe. The placing of the structures themselves are white outlines, that you fill in by gathering the resources, then applying them to the outline. The building is simple, and elegant; just the way it should be.

The visuals of the game are really nice, even though the world loads on the fly. You will see alot of popping in of trees, grass, land, and things of that nature, even with the farthest rendering distance applied. The shading, motion blur, and textures are all very well done, and look quite good even on the lowest settings.

All in all, this is shaping up to be a great game, and I look forward to see what the developers have in store for us in future patches.

If I ever want to bore myself to sleep, this running simulator is great.
Didn't get enough sleep last night? Well fear not, this game will is so boring and tiring, that you will fall asleep playing the game in minutes.
