One of the greatest games I've played in a while, especially when you play with friends. If you're into exploring, killing, looting and base-building, then this game is definitely for you, as it all comes packed in one neatly wrapped package.

A game with a decent hook, gripping world and experience-ruining conclusion.

When you're getting close to the end of the game, quests will start deteriorating in quality and you are forced to make decisions where none of them leave you satisfied. Playing through the last /3 of the game just feels like torture, and like the devs just want to ♥♥♥♥ on your prior experiences and the connections you've made with the people of this world.

The perfect way to play this game is to keep doing the main quest until you meet "Father" and then never think about doing more again. Focus on side quests, exploring, killing deathclaws and behemoths, as well as settlement building for the best experience.

In terms of gameplay and general experience, it's Bethesda so what can you expect. There are bugs, issues and exploits, but none that will completely ruin your experience for the most part. It's in my opinion the last Bethesda game that could make it above 5/10.

Game as a whole deserves a 7/10. I'm generally happy with the game, but like I said, the main quest makes me want to stop playing towards the end.

REVIEW

NO SPOILERS
Sons of the Forest is the sequel to the popular horror-survival game The Forest, made by Endnight games. After 10 years of waiting, Sons of the Forest builds and improves upon a lot of the design choices and issues that plagued The Forest. Hit detection is great, the graphics are some of the best I've seen and the introduction of free building, which let's you build anything without having to use prefabs is amazing. Now, first I want to address my thought process when I rated how grindy and long the game is, because there are two sides of the coin to each of these sections. I also want to mention the sounds and graphics because although they're both amazing most of the time, it seems to stumble in some areas.

The story itself is very short and if you were to just speed run the game and not really care about learning the lore behind the island you find yourself on, I think you could finish the game in about an hour or two, or 10 minutes with glitches. But you're probably gonna be more focused on surviving, defending yourself, building and pissing your pants in the caves. At least, if you're anything like me and hate horror, you will. Still, I would have preferred some more story elements to flesh it out a bit more. And what's this focus with golf? (You'll get what I mean when you play it yourself).
Most of the story will come from reading notes and finding clues throughout the games, which can only be found inside caves and bunkers. The section of the map you spawn on definitely got most of the love here as there are many locations with tons of weapons, gear and clues to find. But the other half of the map (yes you can go to the other side of the mountain) seem to have little to no locations to find. There are a couple locations meant for the endgame, but I would have loved to see it be spiced up a bit more. It feels very unfinished over there.
Now although you can finish the game quickly, like I said you will probably be more focused on building and surviving. The reason for my grind rating is simply because of the building. Without essential tools you'll find exploring the island or using duplication exploits, building is a chore. The log cart is not in this version of the game, and although you will have other means of transporting logs later on, it still takes a long time. I suggest playing with friends to make your building job easier.

Graphics are mostly amazing in this game. The foliage, and forest itself is some of the best I've seen and watching the sun set and rise never gets old in this game. There does however seem to be a slight issue with the balance between softness and sharpness in the graphics. And water graphics, although very good, seems to not be able to render a colour and is mostly black.

Sound is mostly great as well. The falling rocks and dripping water still freaks me out and the sound of the enemies are horrifying. But I've noticed the sound seems to peak and distort whenever it starts raining or you're in a forest and the wind is blowing through the trees. This sounds down right horrible and I usually turn my volume down in these scenarios. Bat and cannibal sounds seem to also be at a much higher volume than other things simply for the jump-scare factor, which I find very annoying.

Overall I find this game amazing, considering it's only in early access. For the price of just $30 this game is a steal. I would suggest playing with friends to make the experience even better, or you can try hopping on random servers and make some new ones. Just watch out for modders. The game seems to not have any sort of protection in place to prevent mods from working in multiplayer sessions.

I want to start of by saying this. If you're looking for one of the best MMO's on the market, this is it. But if you start out this game expecting it to play like Skyrim, you'll be disappointed. However, summed up: This game is a masterpiece and will easily have you spend hours.

Pros:

Starting this game gives you that one feeling of adventure. Every location is unique. The skill system is gigantic and gives a lot of opportunities for every kind of playstyle you can imagine. The lore is deeper in this game than the mariana trench. The community is some of the best I've ever experienced and the game in almost all it's aspects is simply.. amazing. It's hard to find words for a game with so much content and stuff to do, which also succeeds in doing what it does.

Cons:

The only thing this game is lacking from other MMO's is probably some of the most anoying parts of the game, as it's so simple things that are lacking. Unique legendaries and fishing skill line being a couple of them. Conversations with NPC's is probably the worst part of the game as most of the voice actors don't sound very "energetic", and they also sometimes feel hard to keep up with. Most NPC's are boring and I've ended up skipping most. Not all are boring however, but it's very few that I found interresting.
