This game isn't for everyone. If you're looking for a game driven by a strong story, or a game that is combat-oriented, or a game focused on deep and fascinating characters, you're better served elsewhere. If you want an experience, though, driven by the freedom to explore a procedurally-generated universe however you see fit, pursuing your own goals and crafting your own story, this game is absolutely for you.
No Man's Sky competes with The World Ends With You as my favorite game of all time (these are very different games), and I appreciate the flexibility the last update has given players. Now you can customize your game's difficulty to whatever play style works for you. I personally wanted a more difficult experience, so I went in and cranked everything up to max. Enemies are harder, my equipment can break, resources are rarer and more expensive... but if that's not your cup of tea, you can customize your difficulty settings to your own preference and play the game the way you want to play it.
The beauty of No Man's Sky, in my opinion, is the opportunity to make your own story with your own rules in an almost infinite universe. I've been playing this game since day 1 and I've loved every minute of it. The devs continue to release free updates and have added tons of new content to the game since release, and this pattern shows no signs of stopping. I've never found another game that scratches my itch for space exploration as much as this one does, and I can see myself playing No Man's Sky until the day I die.

I very much enjoy this game for what it is: a 'Mech shooter with no single-player story. That's fine by me. If you want the chance to pilot a 'Mech on the field, then this is the game for you! Efforts have been made to balance Clan and IS tech - Clan tech, in my opinion, has the essence of superior technology (higher damage, more range, etc.), while IS tech has the essence of greater numbers (more armor, shorter cooldowns, etc.).

If you're a Battletech or Mechwarrior fan, I'd highly recommend giving this game a go. If you're looking for something more like tabletop Battletech, you can always wait for Harebrained Schemes to release their game in 2017. This might tide you over until then.
