Payday 2 in VR is a very good experience, especially so for a free game. In fact its almost startling how good it is despite being free. I'll go over its best and worst parts

The good
Payday 2 VR features multiple mechanics changes to better lend itself to VR: such as being able to interact with objects while shooting or being able to take cover in places that you normally can't, such as laying down in a hallway to reduce your silhouette. This allows the VR player more versatility than traditional players and helps to make it so a VR player isn't just a hindrance to everyone else.

Graphically the game also holds up fairly well. You can clearly tell that payday 2 is coming up on a decade now but it's still passable even in VR. This is also probably helps anyone with a weaker PC trying to play as in my experience Payday 2 is not very demanding of your PC even in VR by modern standards.

Then there is the gunplay which is by far its strongest point. You can clearly hold a gun, look around at its model while your customizing it, hold it in awkward ways while shooting, and while the game doesn't really give you any recoil, the controllers do shake while firing. While this may not sound impressive by itself, quite frankly none of these pros do, when they are all put together they come together to create a very good, unique experience. An experience which is also FREE.

The bad
Depending on your VR system (Valve index in my case) your mileage may vary when trying to get your controllers to work properly. For example, on the Index by default you can't access the pause menu mid heist (You'll need to get a community keybind fix for it).

The game also does a terrible job at explaining how to interact with some of the new UI for VR players. For example, on your left hand you can swipe left to bring up chat however, for you to type back you'll need to pull the right trigger to activate it, which I only found out about 10+ hours in.

After that comes driving, which I think is by far the weakest point. I do not know if it is stemming from the earlier controller issues that I've yet to figure out but for whatever reason I literally can't drive. In any heist that requires driving I've either not played or hopped in someone elses car if the option was there. I could test this further but its not like payday 2 has a practice driving mode where you can figure this out at your pleasure.

Overall

Overall Payday 2 Vr is a solid VR experience made better by the fact that its free. It is commendable that Overkill chose to release this for free when their list of paid DLC is so long that it looks like a CVS receipt. On a technical level its also very impressive, on release payday was 5 years old and not designed with VR at mind at all. So to go through all the work to release a VR DLC that is actually pretty good for free is praiseworthy. I'd absolutely recommend giving it a try after all, its free, the worst thing that can happen is you waste an hour or two.

TDLR: It has control issues on a valve index, but its pretty good
