I won't wax poetic about this game TOO much (yet), but this is a very very very good video game. Combat and mobility is fresh, fun, snappy and punishing, but the whimsy of the gameplay takes nothing away from the dead serious tone of the story. In fact, its difficulty enhances it! It is a shining example of how the medium should be used and the devs have brass balls to release it when they did.

This game has a TON going for it;

If you're already acclimated to movement shooters, this thing is a dream. Once you get all your tools, levels become hybrids of source jump/surf maps and boomer shooter combat. It's everything I wanted when we first got the demo. A major plus that I didn't predict was the greatness of playing with friends asynchronously by competing for times; every level we end up driving each other up the leaderboard until ending in the top 500, 100, or 10. It's supremely fun, and gives real incentive to optimize movements that would otherwise be a headache in longer-form levels.

It's dripping with style and vision, featuring a great soundtrack (though I do miss some of the beta tracks!) and fantastic aesthetics.

The "social link" style scenes can be cheesy, but what seperates them from their peers is the fact that White actually acts and talks like an adult; this is certainly helped by the fantastic voice work interspersed through major cutscenes. If you want a comparable vibe, think Travis Touchdown with a little less edge. The main story itself actually remains fairly interesting, though you're absolutely signing up for the gameplay.

The dev says this game was made for "freaks", and while I'll take that label, playing Neon White mostly makes you feel that this game was made for people who love games.

Voting yes because I respect the design of this game and I don't want to bog it down. This is still a review about why I don't like it.

fight knight review.

the concept of punching enemies is not invested in as much as the concept of walking around and dealing with repetitive random encounters

combat is extremely easy to cheese and there's no flow. It's honestly really awkward most of the time. The decision to add an autopunch button to let you mow down disposable mooks while tapping parry exemplifies that this is a design choice.

special moves are required, but also the microgames to do them really just boil down to qtes pressing the one punch button in different rhythms

the only save point is in the hub town, which you *never get a shortcut to*. so to make sure you don't lose your spot you trudge back to the beginning after taking enough chip damage from ranged enemies to make you feel unsafe

80% of the game is wasted time 20% is punching

shoulda called it fight sometimes

it's obvious because its in the description but I need to emphasize this: you see screenshots of this game, you think doom rip and tear punching mechanics with constant organic flow; it's not that. it's grid-based, like if gen 1-5 pokemon were first person + all combat is random encounters. which is... interesting? but not when dungeons are designed such that its literally more efficient to just open the map and play it like an ascii game from the overhead map than actually exploring the world in first person. once again, the game proves this is intentional from the design of the second level, where knowing safe spots to walk on the map is more efficient than staying in first person.

the mechanics are punch out, but the viewpoint is not conducive to that style of gameplay at all, and neither is the design of encounters. bosses and characters are interesting, but they would be more interesting if they were polished punch-out style combat sections and all combat was a one-time encounter. This game has the characters and designs to make that work well, but its not that.

gonna drop it its a time waster but i'm not gonna refund because i respect the hustle

Excellent through and through. Gritty, punishing, and real, but heartwarming at the same time. An amazing combination of traditional rpg mechanics and purely story-based gameplay.

It's cute, has charm, wit, and good music. Definitely reccomend, and I'm surprised I haven't heard anyone besides one person talk about this game.
