Just go play Mass Effect Legendary Edition. This doesnt scratch the itch, but old faithful Mass Effect is always there for you.

I havent been as interested or invested in a game since probably Mass Effect. This game is amazing. I have over 150 hours in it, about 80 in early access, and i have not completed it yet. granted, i have taken my time and I believe i have done just about all the quests so far, but there is a LOT here, and unlike ubisoft games, all of it feels good and natural. all the side quests matter, everything is connected. This is a masterpiece and you can tell the devs poured their souls into it. I'm already contemplating what im going to play on my next playthrough. Do yourself a favor and buy this game. you wont regret it.

I went into this game expecting something like Xcom, which would have been ok, but I was pleasantly surprised. This is freaking awesome. The opening shot of the planet and the ships is perfect, you feel like your in an aliens movie, and instead of running and hiding from them, you control a squad of ultimate bada##es and you just go around stomping them. It is absolutely awesome. Its not all a straight up bug hunt though, if you are not on point with your tactics it is VERY easy to lose a marine, and once one goes down, its easy to lose the whole squad. In my opinion, the combat is very well balanced and I am thoroughly enjoying the game. some critiques, the characters all look a bit off, could have used a bit more polish on the character design, and a few more customization options would be appreciated, but frankly, its an awesome game and you should buy it.

So I am no Harry Potter fanatic, I mean I always liked the IP but im not a die hard fan or anything. That said, this is probably the most fun I have had playing a game in years. I have about 30 hours in at this point, havent finished the story yet, I have been doing a lot of exploring the world and Hogwarts itself, and there is a lot to find. Is it the "best game of all time" or whatever a lot of these 10/10 reviews state? No. Im old enough to remember true classics like KOTOR and Mass Effect, Oblivion, Morrowind, Fallout 3 and New Vegas. Those were all truly amazing games for their time, those were 9 or 10/10 for the time in which they were made. Hogwarts is very good, but 10/10? Nah probably not. I'll give a more detailed breakdown below.

Gameplay: 9/10
The controls were smooth, the combat is very fun. Its kind of that, easy to learn hard to master kind of combat which I very much enjoy. When you progress through the story and start unlocking cooler spells and combos, it really changes things up a bit and makes you feel like an epic sorcerer. They nail it. I genuinely cannot think of how they could have pulled off the combat any better. That said, I still find myself occasionally getting bored with it. It has more to do with the story itself I think, than the actual gameplay.

Story: 7/10
Again, havent finished the main quest yet, but so far its been kind of average, maybe a little above average story wise. The story is interesting but it lacks.. something. Some kind of pull that I cannot find the words to describe, yet other games have it. Like in Mass Effect, the first time I played through all of those games, I couldnt put them down. I played late into the night. This however, lacks something.

Characters: 4/10
This is maybe what is lacking the most for me. Any good story needs good characters and while there are some memorable characters in the game, so far at least, none of them stand out very much. I think this game very much needed dedicated companions like Ron and Hermione. I get that its hard to pull off something like that with the way the story is laid out, but the fact that so far the only guy whose name I even remember is the Lucian, means that, to me, not nearly enough work was put into the characters. I want to interact with my classmates. I want to hang out in the dorms, playing games and sneaking around the castle at night. I want to have the slightly awkward teenage phase of trying to get a date to the dance. Instead its just a series of fetch quests with single lines of dialogue that in no way change the outcome of the quest. You are not going to get a Garrus Vakerian or a Thane, or a Wrex or anything like that in this game. I'd be surprised if you remember any of the characters names when your done.

Graphics: 7/10
Nothing special, nothing terrible. I dont have a monster PC that I can crank everything up to 11 but I think it looks nice.

Sound Design: 8/10
Sounds are very good and contributes to the over feel of the game nicely. Sound is very important in something like this to help immerse you in the world and its a strong point of the game. That said, there are a few odd characters that sound.. off. Thats more on the voice actors that the sound designers, maybe this should be under the characters review? Anyway, over sound design very good.

Overall.... I think a solid 7 / 10, maybe like a 7.5
The game is fun, it is immersive, the combat is fantastic. The story does the job but isnt particullarly great, the graphics are fine, its mostly let down with the characters. If they had put more time into the students that we interact with, the game would be much better for it. If you like the Harry Potter at all, you should play it. I am, overall, happy with it.

Well I beat it, took about 19 hours I guess? So a solid campaign. I gotta say I had fun, it kept me hooked all the way through. They are constantly throwing new troop types at you, and the game-play never gets stale. I thoroughly enjoyed every defense mission. But there are some missions that are just frustrating. The Scorpion bug spam is strong towards the middle of the game, these are long range bug units that can take down your troops and heavy walkers in just a couple hits, and at some points it stops being a fun challenge and becomes a tedious slog. I wish they had gotten the same music composer that did the original movie, and the soundtrack is just, well.. meh. That said, I love the game overall, give it a.. 8/10. Highly recommended.

I think Attila is the best total war to date, but I am a huge rome fan so that probably has something to do with it. I have 685 hours in this game and probably 675 of them are as Eastern or Western Rome.
