This is a pretty good metroidvania in terms of controls and visuals. The story so far wasn't terribly interesting, but that's not what I bought the game for anyway. What gets the thumbs down for me is the enemy and boss design. For bosses, you have to stun them using bullets to do any real damage to them. In order to get bullets, you have to hit them. Here's the problem: if you don't stun the boss in one go, they recover their stun meter. With one of the bosses, the max amount of bullets you have at the time isn't enough to stun them and they have an invincibility phase as well where they can just undo all the stun you just did. It's tedious. Normal enemies are also tedious and really spongey. There are none that you don't have to completely halt your progress for to deal with in the exact manner in which it has to be dealt with. Once in a while you'll have the ammo to stun one of them, which is nice, but relief from the tedium every few enemies is really not something that's a selling point.

Tedious and frustrating combat, tedious exploration, tons of padding, disappointing finale.

Holding a button to interact with a switch is not engaging gameplay.

For combat, the most frustrating thing for me was abilities and magic could be interrupted and you lose the resources spent without any effect. Invincibility phases are also a real turn off. And HP is so high to make bosses really drag. Eventually I got so sick of the combat I put it on easy and it beat itself.

Climbing up the debris after the plate falls goes from 3 screens to a whole chapter.

Decided I'd just watch a playthrough of the DLC instead of playing it.

I really wanted to like this and the story seemed interesting along with the townbuilding aspect but:
The idea of having 100 characters seems great until you realize most of them are actively annoying, especially the women. It doesn't help that they say the same thing every time they do their skills. Carrie got booted out of my party as soon as possible due to her "Made you look" voice line. But she still says two lines, one before and one after, every single time you fast travel. Every. Single. Time. And you'll be using it a lot. Mellore repeats "Magic Missile" twice every battle. Even the non-battle characters are annoying. B'baba repeats the same line each time you confirm you want her to scry.
Gameplay is also dreadfully slow. Opening up the menu and switching pages feels slow. Combat feels slow, especially when a support character ability procs (the hot spring one takes so long). Battle plan doesn't work as expected often, e.g. magic use when magic skills are not listed in priority actions. Auto battle never uses heroic combos. None of the stats are explained nor have I found a way to figure out how to use the elements or damage types as there's no info about the enemies available during battle.
UI generally is unpleasant, e.g. fast travel to the main base requires opening up the map, changing to the world map, and going to the second page of that. Put it on the first page.
Limited item storage makes using the rune system painful. Gotta know what you want to put on as well as character compatibility to know what to pull out of storage.
Drop rates are awful especially when several characters require grinding out items to recruit them.
Fishing is boring, but required for recruiting. I don't want to play the top game, but it's required for recruiting. I don't want to play the card game, but it's required for recruiting. And recruiting is required for town building.
So I stopped ~20 hours in. Just wasn't looking forward to finding the next annoying character that I'd leave at my base forever. The plot had one interesting character in Seign but he can't carry the whole game.

Utterly charming. Good humor. Got the songs stuck in my head. Short, easy, cozy game. Adequate plot and characters for the length. Combat is just complex enough for the length and by the time you get towards the end you have abilities that let you reduce the complexity and steamroll enemies if you want. Cooking mini game was again ok for the length of game. There's a theme that everything is good for the length so know that I finished off everything in ~14 hours and I'm very satisfied with my purchase because of that.

Thank you whoever put the NPC that tells you if you've missed something and offers to send you the the area immediately. It fixes so much of the feeling of having to explore everything with a guide so I don't miss anything.

They got the spikes both right and wrong. Right in that getting hit only sets you back to the last platform you touched and a large chunk of health (making the lose less health to spikes chip a requirement for me). They got the spikes wrong at the Wily Castle, having long corridors of spikes just before check points that set you back a ways and more if you run out of health. It completely screws up the flow of the game. Like the designers knew spikes weren't fun so they made them be the least intrusive they could make them, but then throw that out the window at some point. Rage quit an otherwise great mmx clone.
Dev has responded about the spikes in the end of the game, suggesting easy mode. The problem with that solution is it can only be changed at the start of the game and doesn't address the complaint, just makes it slightly less punishing.

Great nostalgic trip back to point and click. There are some issues, but it's still very enjoyable and I didn't come across any moon logic that plagued the Sierra games and others.
