Buggy and clumsy. A downgrade from the original in pretty much every possible way except for the physics engine. Massively collapsed gameplay depth, clumsier UI, frequent bugs and compatibility issues, less engaging story and characters. Entirely skippable.

Gameplay-wise, there's not a whole lot here - for the most part you fly out to the ring, mine asteroids, and fly back - but what is here is very unique and very well-polished, with a commitment to realism and immersion. You'll find yourself gritting your teeth every time you slide between two asteroids to escape a pirate tail, wincing with pain every time you match velocity with a valuable ore chunk without seeing the enormous rock it's floating towards. It's worth the modest price just to see all the fascinating little details Delta V has to offer.

The gameplay is slow, and can be frustrating, but it contributes to a tense and risky atmosphere. Every bit of velocity you add is velocity you might have to shed in a hurry if you end up on a collision course. Every kilometer you travel into the ring is a kilometer you'll have to travel out to get to safety if something happens. Every mistake happens in agonizing slow-motion as your hundred-ton ship gets broadsided by a chunk of ice.

Solid recommend for space sim fans.

The saddest thing about The Outer Wilds is that you can only play it for the first time once. An unforgettably moving experience.

Fantastically absorbing. I played the free version on Anuke's Itch page and immediately knew I would have to buy it on steam to support the developer.

This is an engrossing factory/automation/strategy game centered around building increasingly complex factories and supply lines to conquer both handmade and procedurally generated areas. The core game loop involves building a base in a new area and supplying it with resources while also feeding those resources to turrets on the frontline to fend off waves of enemies, or to factories for building troops of your own.

As you play, you'll unlock new machines, resources, units, sectors, etc. But you'll also learn to optimize what you already have, designing your own custom schematics to abstract away a lot of the processes in the early game. You'll even get ways to ship resources between sectors, allowing you to create huge distribution networks to make sure every region has what it needs.

Maps vary between tower-defense style sectors where you have to hold your position against increasing waves of enemies, and base sectors, where you have to build units of your own to take down an enemy base. It's a clever twist on the typical tower-defense formula, rewarding you for understanding each unit and tower's strengths and weaknesses. There are tons of sectors to try out with varying sizes, difficulties, and resources, so you can really take the game at your own pace.

Overall, Mindustry exemplifies the best this niche genre has to offer, and with a free version available to download, there's no reason not to give it a try.

A fantastic adaptation of the board game, but also a fantastic tactical turn based strategy RPG even newcomers. The digital version is able to abstract away a lot of the more tedious elements of Gloomhaven (mainly setup and managing enemies) to let you focus on the fun parts - picking cool cards, making clever plans, and screaming because that 12 damage hit you queued up got nullified are you kidding me I literally burned two cards for that hit ahhhhhhh

Although the heart of the game is really playing co-op with a small consistent group of friends, the solo mode is still a lot of fun. So far we've encountered a few frustrating problems - it's easy to ♥♥♥♥ yourself over with a single misclick, there are a handful of bugs that can desync what each player sees, but generally both solo and co-op are a fresh and accessible take on Gloomhaven physical. The game may say early access, but it feels very polished.

The big thing it's missing is a lot of the story/lore. Gloomhaven is more than just a very cool tactical strategy game, it's also got lots of interesting questlines and scenarios with cool twists that I haven't seen much of in the digital version. Hopefully we will see more of that as the game develops.

Highly recommend

A barely functional slog of an action RPG reminiscent of Diablo in a generic zombie setting. With virtually no horizontal progression options, piss-poor vertical progression, a dull world to explore, boring combat, and grindy mechanics, there's legitimately very little here worthy of praise. The ability to pause and play combat at will is kinda neat. Beyond that, it's a bewilderingly boring game.

Character customization is nonexistent. You choose your character's appearance from 18 generic looking army dudes (sorry, no women allowed in this game!) and pick a character class that determines your stat allocation. When you level up, you'll have access to such innovative perks as "deal 5% more damage with assault rifles" and "gain 5% more health" and "gain 5% evade and crit chance." The order in which you unlock these utterly dull perks is strictly controlled, so your character build is decided for you basically from the word go. The few abilities you do unlock for each class are so bland that from the moment you create your character you have basically nothing to look forward to.

Most of the enemies I faced for as long as I endured this game were waves of zombies, which means cover is virtually pointless and tactics consist of kiting enemies and waiting for them to group up enough to use an ability on. Combat is just a matter of plopping your guys on the map, watching them shoot zombies, and shuffling them around when bad guys get too close. Enemies are spongy and lack all variety.

Exploration is dull, with little to find, and navigating between the perpetual fetch quests is a slog through constantly respawning enemies. It was unclear whether the sidequests I was doing were actually giving me any reward? I don't think they gave XP, but they definitely didn't give gear either, so I have no idea why I was supposed to do them. Progression is extremely slow. In the 3ish hours I played none of the loot I found was more than a tiny fraction better than the default equipment - I'm talking 2 or 3 points of DPS difference out of 40+

Cannot recommend this any less.

It's not the prettiest and the UI is kinda bad, but I've yet to find a more detailed evolution sim. No other sim I've seen offers this level of depth in the types of adaptations that can form - poisons, mimicry, parasitism, pheromones, communication, altruism, multicellular organisms, senses of smell, sight, sound, sonar, and touch, multiple forms of movement. All of this means that your creatures could really go any number of directions given enough time.

So far I've never run a simulation long enough to get some of the really interesting stuff others have reported, but even watching my little critters learn to walk or change directions was exciting.

Was very excited for this purchase, but finding the fun it is has been difficult. Taking any of these things on their own, the high combat difficulty, weak abilities, lack of save points, and scarcity of resources could make for a fun and tense survival experience. However, all of these things in confluence make the game brutally un-fun. I spend an hour on the first dungeon only to finally face the boss - a regular ol' bandit - to find that he had a special ability that stunlocked me. I took one hit and the fight was over; unable to do anything but stand still and die. I did nothing wrong. I made no mistakes. Yet I still lost an hour of progress.

The rest of the game so far isn't much of a departure from that. You start in the village, head to a nearby dungeon, barely survive an encounter with the first 4 or 5 enemies, and then either have to retreat for a nap and a save point and come back (upon which all enemies have respawned) or push further in and certainly die, losing all progress for the last 30-60 minutes. Combat is RNG heavy, most of the low-level abilities don't do much to shift the tides of battle, and healing is slow and expensive.

I have zero doubt that this review will be met by people calling me casual or making fun of me for not being good enough at the game even though I grew up on games like this. To those people I would say that there's a difference between making a game satisfyingly challenging and making a game unforgivingly brutal.

Way more frustrating and boring than I remember as a kid.

Picked this up because I was curious to see whether it held up to my nostalgia. The core gameplay mechanic of flying around casting spells is decent, even if the pace is a bit slow even at double speed. But the sheer, unforgiving grind of the game makes it a boring slog. You quickly fall into a rhythm of cycling the same 4-5 spells, waiting for them to recharge, casting them again...

Combine that with clumsy controls, bugs, bad graphics, some absolutely cruel missions (Exterminate every single monster in every friendly territory *while* monsters continue to flood in from neighboring hostile territories? Come on) and you get a game where you're constantly fighting against it to have any degree of fun.

I'm grateful to have finished it so I can close the book on this chapter of nostalgia and never open this game again.

This is a tough one to thumb down. Shadowrun Returns is by no means a bad game, but it's the weakest entry in the series, both gameplay and story-wise.

While enjoyable on its own, the first entry in the Shadowrun Returns series is easily surpassed by Shadowrun: Dragonfall and Shadowrun: Hong Kong. Also, $15 is a big ask for a game this clunky and relatively short.

Many people recommend skipping this one and going right to Dragonfall or Hong Kong. I think Shadowrun Returns is worth playing, but if you only have the time and money to play one, Dragonfall, is your best bet.
