the garfield Christmas special, is technically a different Garfield universe, you see there are 5 different Garfield universes that all have different ways of functioning; the Garfield strip is the most canon to Garfield because thats how Garfield began; the Garfield cartoons are technically a production show which is just Garfield in a tv production studio; the Garfield Movie universe has Garfield in real life and is probably the least cannon Garfield universe in existence; the other Garfield universe is the Garfield direct to dvd movies which shows the "production" of Garfield strips and could technically be cannon but since the "Garfield strip" in the movie they showed doesn't even exist, it isn't really likely; the last Garfield universe is the 3d Garfield show universe which had references from Garfield strips and re-used entire episode ideas from the original Garfield and friends show and made it into a cheap yet watchable show. So that is the Garfield universe theory.
