Early Access Review
A fun little roguelite. The visuals and style is fantastic, with enough story to satisfy one invested in the plot. The mechanics, while fairly basic, are executed well and balanced accordingly. There's some potential to find really strong combinations but nothing I've found is overly OP yet.

Overall, well priced for the amount of potential play I'm likely to get out of it

Even after all this time and all the DLC, still one of the best timewasters I know of.

Sure, the community can be toxic, and the players in pubs can be complete idiots, and the whole premise of the game is about stealing money (mostly YOUR money with all the DLC you need), but it's so much mindless fun when you find that zen loadout on an endless map and just sit there killing cops for hours upon hours while ignoring the objective or cooking meth.

And the music is still the best. Period.

tl;dr: How does this game not have an "Overwhelmingly Positive" review score?!

Take the best parts of EVE, distill them with a bit better balancing of ships, add in the complimentary massive universe (which is LITERALLY the Milky Way Galaxy, mostly to scale, and very accurately done in terms of where they put things we know of and where they inserted things we don't), and then have it require no subs once you buy the base game.

On top of all that, give it some of the best space combat I've seen, make the Open Play an optional thing for when your friends aren't on or for more challenges to Trading and such, and then slap on Solo play for when you're feeling zen, and you're got something really special.

If you want combat, this game has that.

You want to be non-violent and trade you way to profit? This game has that too.

You want to be a pirate? You can do that with very little risk to yourself and your standing, and still make a profit.

You want to be a bounty hunter? Go for it.

You want to be that guy to goes where no one has gone before...AND GET PAID FOR IT? Hell yes this game has that too.

Soundtrack isn't anything really special, but the touches it adds to the game are really something else. Going in for autodock? Suddenly Nutcracker Suite. Combat in progress, and the opponent is exploding? You get a nice victory aria. The music fits the situation and adds to the game without being overbearing or omnipresent. 9/10

Gameplay is a solid 10/10 on account of the ease of assigning any control setup you want and tweaking it to fit the tools you have, and still having a completely playable game. I'm currently using a joystick with only 3 good springs and a huge deadzone, and I'm flying circles around most of the AIs and killing Anacondas without issue.

Visuals are STUNNING considering the size of the game. 400 billion star systems sounds like it'd require a ton of hard drive space but instead of going the Star Citizen route of uniquely detailed environments to the Nth degree, they cut back the visual uniqueness to a much more realistic level and it actually makes the game look BETTER to me. 10/10

Replayability loses its meaning in this game because even as you're doing one thing over and over again, every time you do it something is different. Trading your favorite route? Prices might have changed, or the factions ruling the end point may have lost a war for control and now hate you. Bounty hunting in a Resource Extraction Site? That last load of hunting you did pissed of a minor faction, now they're sending death squads after you from time to time, increasing the risk but also increasing your rewards by virtue of their bounty. Mining away in the A ring of a metal rich gas giant? ...Well not everything can be exciting all the time, but this game does it pretty well overall. 8/10

And I have to add in a bonus section simply for the fact that this game is still in development and only seems to be getting BETTER with time. Next patch is going to introduce a galaxy wide faction system, with bonuses for participation but no requirements to participate. New ships are being added every few patches as well, and I've yet to find a ship in game I wouldn't have any use for (objectively, of course. I'm in a Vulture right now and wouldn't say an Eagle or Sidewinder is a ship I'll fly any time soon, but I'd still fly them in the right situation). There really is no one "universal" best ship for any job outside of trading (You really can't beat the Lakon Type 9 Heavy for short hop high profit routes at the moment) as each ship has pros, cons, loadout restrictions, and pricing to outfit, so you can feel like a total badass in your Cobra MkIII and have no trouble taking down Anaconda AIs at Elite rank with a bit of fancy flying and the right tools.

If you like freeform games, and you like MMOs, and you like space, this is the one for you. Good luck Commanders

So I'll cut right to the chase

This game is great. It's like the bastard child of Dead Island, Resident Evil, and Mirror's Edge.
The game runs extremely well considering the sheer number of zombies you can expect, the quality of the environment, and the day/night cycle and shadows. Depending on how quickly you push through, you might get sick of Jade/Ayo remind you to "get inside, night is coming", though they do vary the exact line so it's not that bad.

Speaking of night, EVERYTHING about this game is twice as amazing because the night gameplay. You are incentivized to go do things at night because most XP and DROPs values are increased (OUTSIDE of safe zones, before you go try to exploit that), as is the risk of being dismembered, defenestrated, or outright DESTROYED by even the lowliest biter. The risk is worth it most times, assuming you know your way around and make sure to beeline it for a safe zone if you start to get swarmed...or in a level 2+ pursuit, because that gets insane REALLY quick.

As for the plot, while at first it seems like your standard Zombie Outbreak Pathogenb Scenario, it's actually a lot deeper and pretty fresh and exciting. Some pretty obvious twists, but nothing too badly done.

The sound in the game is pretty amazing, the music fits the mood, and the zombies all sound great.

Combat is actually pretty balanced in terms of difficulty. You're not gonna be able to take down an army with a crowbar, but a small group is fairly easy to kill. The special enemies are where it gets tough, and even knowing how to beat them sometimes isn't enough to actually execute it, especially when it comes to Demolishers (especially when there's MORE THAN ONE in the area). That being said, there are very few places in the game where you're forced into a stand up fight for too long, and the areas you are and usually ripe with alternatives to simply wading in and hacking them all to death

So, overall, this game gets a 9.5/10 from me, the only thing barring it from a 10 being the tendency for a biter to grab you right as a bomber turns the corner >.>

TL;DR, this game is worth the money for the single player ALONE.

All the issues with controlling the character from the first season and a lot of the issues with combat scene timing seems to be greatly improved. The story is as good as ever (twists I can't see a mile off are rare, and this chapter had not one but TWO), and the fact that your choices from Season 1 are clearly carried over right from the get go is a nice touch.

I highyly recommend this game to anyone who played Season 1 and enjoyed it as well as any fans of the show who are interested.
