One of the best Card games design wise.

This is a difficult game to review (with a "No"), because the game is excellent! The problem is - it's just buried under so many layers of needless and even atrocious stuff.

The core gameplay of battles with the cards is really good.

But for some questionable design choices (like probably wanting this to be AAA and throwing to much money at it) you ALSO get a lackluster dating sim, a first person exploration sim, which is not fun but tedious and the better cards locked away if you don't comply with the game designers "vision" of the game of running around for hours trying to find some "mystical secrets" on the map or just herbs in the garden.

If they would have decided to cut all the crap of the abbey and make it more a tactical game around the card-battles, this would be an instant success.

What exactly is the target audience for this? The game is to expansive for teenagers in puberty (which the Dating-Sim part of the game obviously caters to), but for me as an "old rich guy" I just want to play a decent tactical game and really could care less about the question if I should gift the candle with jet fuel or the box of candy to some crybaby teenager witch (Nico).

Not all is bad though. I played it for 60+ hours and it's nice that you can just leave the pc if your wife or toddler needs something, so that's a plus. ;)

Also there were some nice jokes in there now and than. Even maybe 10 or so really good ones.

What does this game need to be good?

A tactical minimap outside of the game where you just can access all the things you need to actually manage your party would be nice. Basically get rid of the abbey and replace it with some X-Com-Mothership-like 2,5D scene.

Also just unlock the cards and other abilities to modify them as the game progresses. No need to run around sensless in some medicore FPS-map to pick up herbs or find "doors".

This game would have been MUCH better with only a quater of the development budget.

The KB series is best at tactical battles. This instance is in almost all aspects a step back from the previous titles (and I am not talking about bugs here).

- You have to run around in console third party view (instead of just clicking where you want to go)

- I have not seen much of the brilliant (and often dark) humor that was present in the previous incarnations of this series.

- Enough is said about the skill tree in other reviews already

- And the Minimap. Apart from not being able to use it for traveling (like - you have to RUN there), you also don't see enemy armies there and how strong they are. So - if you back of from a fight because to come back later with a stronger army... you actually won't know and have no chance to find out - how strong this army actually is. Apart from... well.. RUNning there again to find out. This is an absolute unnecessary design decision - probably by the art department being proud of the movement animation while running.

- English voice acting is lacking but that is the most easy part to ignore.

- Army Management is a joke. Why on earth can't i just use the mouse? I mean - I get it, you want this game to be playable on a nitendo switch (or whatever other reason you had to castrate the UI in such a way), but ... this handling is just ... worth a refund alone, without all the other aspects.

- Personally I liked the comicy style of the battles more. The units are to small, why even bother with animation. They could have just used Icons. It would have been much better, to just use ONE model of each troop-type and display this at an actual seeable and enjoyable size.

It's the best game of "Bloodbowl" there is. And beside of the quality of this particular PC-Incarnation of the game, BB in general is a pretty awesome.

It's playing a space hydra from Master of Orion 2 with an own agenda. Nuff said.
