I love rogue-lite mechanics and I love tower defense games and this perfectly mixes both

As a tower defense game it's the best I've played in years because:
- The randomness that the rogue-lite elements mean that there's no concrete 'correct' way to play every level. It reminds me of a Starcraft 2 custom game called Lottery Defense where you have to make the best with what you have.
- There are a lot of different towers and I've found myself using most of them at different points during different runs. I'm sure as I get more decks up to ascension 10 certain towers will rise up as being better than the rest but so far I'm finding that most of the towers I've tried so far can work just fine.
- The TD mechanics themselves are just really, really solid. The enemies are varied, the maps work fine (I always preferred non-mazing TDs), and the individual battles and individual full runs of a game are the perfect length.

I'd say the rogue-like elements aren't quite as well done as some of the best games in the genre but they still work perfectly fine and are mostly just there to make the TD elements of the game more fun, which they succeed in doing.

Random thoughts:
- The music is great but there aren't enough tracks.
- The game doesn't have much personality. Not really a problem for me who has played hundreds of custom WC3 and SC2 maps that mostly use the same models, but it would have been nice to have some sort of story or characters. Every sector looks and feels mostly the same too which I think is a missed opportunity.
- The game is a lot easier than most rogue-lite games which I personally think is a huge plus. The games difficulty starts easy and ends up hard once you go up in ascension levels which I much prefer to a lot of games in the genre which start difficult and ramps up to being so difficult that basically only the best players can clear it.
- I saw the dev chatting on Discord when I had a couple of questions and he was a really nice guy who seemed very passionate about his game.


9/10 easy recommend for any TD fan.

One of the best games I have ever played. It's a walking simulator but it does it perfectly.

Most of my time with this game (other than AFK which accounts for well over 50% of my time unfortunately - family life) was just pushing through hoping to like it like I have other TW games. I tried a bunch but I have just realised that I uninstalled the game while ago to make SSD space and never looked back so here's a review with that in mind.

Early access done right and a sequel done right :)

More of the same Rogue Legacy but with plenty of new ideas and features.

Game is really hard though,

Great puzzles. Beware that they are hard as nails though. I can normally only get through around half of the puzzles in the CtC Sudoku games, and this one is even harder!

Disclaimer: This review assumes that you aren't an expert player. For expert-level players and above this DLC looks amazing.

This DLC adds 4 main things:

Wurmkin Clan: One of the good new additions. The clan has plenty of new and interesting mechanics, has fantastic art, and fits in well with the other clans. The only real drawback here is that one of its main new mechanics, Reap, is made useless because the last boss is essentially immune to it by default. That is more of a problem with the last boss and the difficulty scaling of the DLC in general though.

Pact Shards: A risk/reward mechanic. Get buffs but get Pact Shards too, the more Pact Shards you have the stronger the enemies and bosses get.
By far the most fun is the unit merging mechanic that lets you purge a unit from your deck to make another unit stronger. Unfortunately, almost everything else the mechanic offers is improved versions of shop upgrades (-2 ember cost for a spell for Pact Shards, -1 from the shop. +30 spell power for a spell from Pact Shards, +10 from the shop, etc.) or even worse, just a flat gold increase or random artifact.
These seem like fun risk/reward choices at first, but is ruined by the fact that you can only face the last boss if you have 100 Pact Shards or more by the end of the run., and since there are usually less than 200 Pact Shards even available in most runs you end up taking most of your rewards just because you have to rather than taking any sort of risk.

New non-Wurmkin cards: A welcome addition and a lot of fun, another good new addition. A lot of the new Concealed Caverns events especially are interesting and very unique. Just more of the base game but in a good way.

The Last Divinity, the new end boss: By far my least favourite part of the DLC for many reasons. If any of the other new additions were this bad I'd just ignore that part, but this one cannot be ignored since it's the only boss that you have to fight every single game if you want to win. My major issues are:
1. The fact that it has a mechanic that makes Frostbite (A major Stygian mechanic) and Reap (A major Wurmkin mechanic) useless. Fairly easy to fix at least.
2. The terrible, awful, difficulty scaling. Before the DLC I had covenant 25 beat with a few different combos and probably had around a 25% cov25 winrate, low compared to expert players but I at least know the basics of how to clear cov25.
After the DLC released I went on a massive losing streak where I would get to Divinity about as often as you'd expect with that winrate, and then get brutally stomped by it every single time. You'd think the solution would be to simply lower the covenant level? This is where the difficulty scaling really becomes a problem, if I lower the covenant level the rest of the game becomes a cakewalk, I'm breezing through 90% of the run just to stand a chance against Divinity.
3. The fight is so over the top difficult that you need an equally over the top build to go against it. Things that work against everything else in the game including the boss directly before Divinity have no chance in hell at working against it. All that matters is scaling up massively and very very quickly. It's like you're playing a different game with different rules against it.


Overall this absolutely feels like a game made very specifically with expert level players in mind first and foremost. That's cool but I'm not one of them, sadly.
