In general, this game is fun, its combat design is imaginitive, and it is a beautiful game. The designers should be very proud of their overall implementation of a "nonviolent" combat and exploration themes.

However, the "rescue the animals" overall objective shows a lack of foresight and (this may be intentional, I'm only 4 hours in) contrary to the theming. Rather than removing a certain number of animals from the map, your success seems to remove virtually *all* animals from the map. This can cause at least one error where the game softlocks because you "rescued" the animal you needed to progress, and can otherwise interfere with certain completionism objectives that rely on an animal being on the map. Forgot to pet a species of animal before rescuing them? So far, the only way I've seen to resolve it is to roll back to a previous save.

Additionally, the world is so.. quiet, when I'm done. I don't hear the birds, I don't hear the songs. Maybe this is an intentional part of the theming where eventually it's revealed that we were wrong all along, but the world feels deathly quiet as a result of my success.

A touching story, though lacking in some areas. The way characters were introduced and related their conflicts and backstories was interesting, and the story of the whales was well told.

All that being said, I kind of wanted an Endless Ocean 3 and this isn't it. I think it was worth the money (on a 30% sale) but I came into it with the wrong mindset.

Early Access Review
I wanted to like it, but it's gone into EA too early for me. I can't help but keep comparing it to My Time In Portia when it launched into EA, which had a complete introduction to the town, the characters introduced themselves, etc. When I started re:legend, I immediately noticed that besides the cutscenes, no characters had a "This is the first time we've met" dialogue that, for instance, might explain who they are, what they do, why their building is important, etc. Similarly, lack of any explanation as to what any of the menu screens actually mean. Then I started reading the guides and they talked about the need to hoard items but the lack of useful storage thus the need to know in advance what you would need to avoid getting stuck for an entire year and I just... kind of lost interest.

This game needed more of the bonding/core mechanics in it before it went into EA.

I've refunded this for the time being. It'll have to go on a much steeper sale or be *much* more complete before I consider it again.

I was really hoping that the game's great art would mix with good characterization, interesting plot, and farming and I would be sucked in. Unfortunately, I really wasn't- Either because I've been playing Stardew followed by Story of Seasons followed by Rune Factory and can't take any more cute, or because it misses the mark. One of the things that struck me, for instance, was that the crew just disappeared and nobody talked about them after the first cutscene and nobody seems surprised to see me on this supposedly semimythical island land and.. Plus, its cutseyness comes off as less cute and more groanworthy.

I don't know man. Maybe if I'd given it more time, but Steam's TC on refunding is clear- I gave it an hour and a half to make an impression on me, and it rubbed in all the wrong impressions. I just don't think I'm the right customer for this.

Poorly optimized but the devs have been very clear that that was going to be something that evolved as early access does. Having a ton of fun in single player on ARK. Not going to tamper with the online servers for a while though mostly because of reasons related to the Simcity and D3 incidents.

All in all, has a ton of promise. Delivers on survival and dinosaurs.

Well...

.... *checks death total*

Maybe not so much survival.

Not really worth the price tag- Bought it thinking it was early access on sale, very disappointed to find out this is pretty much it. Not buying anything else from this company.
