After an initial negative review and giving it some more time I can acknowledge that this is a solid game with a lot of progression and different kinds of ways to play and enjoy it. I've now played quite a bit and planning to put many more hours in.

I do maintain that the new player experience is not so good, and that is potentially something that should be improved. At the base level, without modifying the difficulty in any way, the game is just too easy while throwing bullet-spongy enemies at you, which results in mindless circle strafing and firing at enemies for potentially 40-50minutes. This can easily deter new players from exploring the game further.
