Rise, Son of Guilliman

After finishing the campaign I just had to write a review to get my thoughts down on paper, this review will contain no spoilers for the story, but will talk about themes, gameplay and performance. Together of course with an overall impression, to start things off.

Space Marine 2 exceeded my expectations by a significant margin, this game is really, really fun to play. I've seen some other reviews talking about how the combat system is "unforgiving", but I can only say that I disagree. The fast paces melee / ranged blend is really satisfying once you figure out what works for you. I played the game on the second to highest difficulty for my first run so far, I had to adjust in the beginning but once I got over the hurdle, quite frankly I just saw myself improving and getting better at managing the fights. To an extent fights in this game feel reminiscent of those from DOOM, specifically Eternal. Every fight is a puzzle that you need to think creatively to solve together with staying on top of incoming attacks and positioning.

Complaints about the AI are valid, but I didn't notice much in terms of them getting in the way of me having fun.

Performance wise, I'm running on a fairly old rig, 1080 and an i7-4790k, and I got stable performance albeit not exceptional on the high preset. For me I am fine if a game runs at 30 as long as it is stable, and Space Marine 2 was, depending on level, either running at stable 30, stable 45, stable 60 or unstable 20-30. The 20-30 range being in some of the later where the game is really flexing it's muscle in terms of scale and the number of effects on screen.

As for all the stuff with the Epic integration? Quite literally you accept the EULA and that's it. It has no other impact on your gameplay. I find complaints around this sort of stuff to be valid, if exaggerated. It is okay to be upset that this is "forced" upon you, but I do not think it warrants leaving a negative review for the game, personally.

Story? This feels like it could've been a 40k novel. I say that with significant praise, compared to the first game the stakes are higher, the characters are better, and it just feels like a part of actual canon now.

I am incredibly satisfied, and depending on how the game develops in the next few years, it might firmly take the spot for "My personal favorite 40k game", as it is now, however? Firmly top 3.

Suffice to say, I strongly recommend this game, I will be diving into the multiplayer and co-op components in the next few days, and if there is anything to add or detract from this review, expect addenda :)

If no addenda are found on this review, my stance holds firm.

Speaking as someone who last played a Eugen game back when R.U.S.E was still a thing, I heartily recommend WARNO, it's by far the most enjoyable PVP RTS I've played in a very long time, though with some caveats for new players

The first dozen or so hours are gonna be challenging, there's so many systems that interact and things to learn, it's a bit of a curve. With that said, as you progress you're gonna have several moments that I think are best described as "seeing the matrix", where you'll see the lines that make the game work, why you lost that engagement, why you won that other one over there, things start to click

And trust me, the sheer amount of happy chemicals your brain starts to release is quite frankly not fair for other games

I highly recommend WARNO, even if you're a complete rookie to the genre, there's ways to learn and good people around, just don't mind the toxicity you can sometimes run into, when you find the right people boy is it a blast, but it's good solo too :)

Only started playing once the game came back to Steam, barely even knew it existed before then, though I had played 1404 years ago.

I'm not going to write some long review that goes into intricate detail on the game, just plain and simply say that this is a damn good time. It's everything I loved about 1404 but ramped up a level, genuinely just a fantastic time and certainly worth a shot if the Anno formula is one you happen to enjoy.

I have a friend who played this for 1700 hours and it has without a shadow of a doubt driven her to the brink of insanity. Several times over, in fact.

But honestly, based on what little I've seen this game just fosters toxicity to levels unseen since ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ league of legends. I have only been able to enjoy my three agonizing hours with this game because of my absolutely ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ friends. Could not recommend, maybe with friends, maybe.
