I got the board game around 7 years ago and it has been a huge hit among me and my friends. We love the game, the diplomacy, the power struggle and slight nuances that can turn the tide in the most dire of situations... By far the best board game out there.

When we learned a digital edition was available, we were excited, mainly because it would allow us to organize games more easily and frequently, because we wouldn't have to gather 6-8 players (8 for the Mother of Dragons expansion) in one place, but also more effectively, because the digital edition would do a lot of the game management automatically. All of this was true and the match times were significantly shorter, because of the automatic management.

The base game is exactly the same as the original, so the game is still as good as ever. It's only missing the already available expansions and hopefully even more expansions in the future...

Now you might be thinking why would I rate the game negatively... I'm writing this review to bring some flaws to the attention of the developers. (Side note: This is the first review I've written of a game in the 11 years of my steam account, but also ever in my life. I'm mentioning this, to give you an idea of how much I love this game, to see it get fixed).

I have played over 10 complete online games now with 6 players and there has not been a single game, where we didn't experience a bug. If I'd count all the abandoned games, then it would be over 20 games. Some bugs are minor and are not game breaking, but some force a player to forfeit or for that matter everyone to abandon the game, because we want to play it together. Some bugs can be dealt with by exiting the match and re-entering, but there have many matches, when one player experienced a bug that forces him to abandon the game.

The usual bugs are:

1) During combat the house cards display a white box in the area where the picture should be, the combat strength of all cards are 2 and players are unable to pick a card. This can continue after exiting and re-entering the game. This has forced at least 3 games to be abandoned and only once was it able to be fixed with re-entering.

2) At different random times of the game a player will be out of sync and the game doesn't catch up. For example during combat, both parties had chosen house cards and the battle was over, the loser had to retreat, but for the loser, the game was stuck at choosing cards. He had chosen a card and was waiting for the other player to pick a card. He exited the game and re-entered, but he could not retreat his units. He tried multiple times to re-enter, he restarted the application, he even restarted steam, but nothing helped and was forced to forfeit the game.


I would rate the game 5/5 if these bugs are fixed, but for now we have to start a new game, knowing we might have to abandon it mid-game or one of us can't finish the game due to a bug. I sincerely hope these bugs are being addressed. We have over 10 people who own or are interested in the game and all of them would also buy upcoming expansions, but for now I'm also recommending all of my friends who have not purchased the game yet, to wait for the bugs to be fixed, so not to buy a broken game.


I should mention that some of us are playing on a mac, so cross-play could be playing a role, but all of the bugs have been encountered on both PC and mac.
