Amazing scifi thriller. Arkane does wonderful work here. Just a terrible shame that the sequel was cancelled.

Battleye is now required for playing this game. I'm not a fan of the invasiveness of Battleye and the performance hit that it does, not to mention some of the potentially weird things it does.

It's Subnautica, but with a bit of a twist. The map is smaller and there are some really confined spaces, so you don't to play with the cyclops. Instead, you get the Sea Truck. You also get a bunch of new base building parts (hello, giant rooms!). There are a lot of biomes, but the map is a bit smaller. I believe developer interviews mentioned that they hadn't planned on making a Subnautica sequel.

Also, there is a new story and a TON of voice-acted dialogue even though you're (mostly) alone. The main character (you) is female. If this bothers you, just stay away. The voice actress who voices the main character also voices Ashley Williams in Mass Effect and she's VERY good.

I think my only complaint is that there isn't more of it. More map, more critters, more story. That being said, I understand restraints placed on Developers, and I've not regretted getting this in early access. Now I can finally see the ending with all of the voiced lines.

So far, this has really improved with the addition of base building, and quests. It's still going to be a mellow game about exploration and harvesting at it's heart, but at least now there is a purpose to it.

Early Access Review
Very beautiful, lots of potential.

Don't buy it yet. Wait until they fix some of the bugs and the crafting system, and balance/tweak the combat/monsters.

The crafting system is a horrible, horrible slog where you have to spend days and days waiting at your base to make each component part so you can craft the next part.

Premise and environment is amazing, and I really hope that they add a bit of story to it.

I'll be sitting around, waiting for them to add more fixes before playing again.

I got this on sale.

Pros: The gameplay is solid. The level designs are fabulous, as is the enemy AI. The plot is logical and makes sense. (My play throughs so far have been stealth-based).

Cons: The game is a bit short (not the shortest I've seen, but it's still short), and so many other things are so good that you really feel hungry for more. The developers added in so many tantalizing plot threads that could be pursued in the game, and yet they didn't do so (it could have been from lack of money, lack of time, etc -- we'll never know). Due to the short length of the game and the other tantalizing "cliffhanger" plots they don't finish or adequately pursue, the game feels chopped short.

That being said, I enjoyed this game enough that I felt it was worth the price I paid. So if you can get it on sale, I would recommend it.
