Disco Elysium is one of those games that seemingly came out of nowhere, but at least for me meant one of the best RPG experience ever. Even though there's a predefined main character, you can actually shape him to your liking (or disliking), not in a way he looks (although to some extent even the looks), but rather what kind of person he is, what are his believes and what thoughts defines him - in essence you can actually role-play a character. This is achieved through the fact, that your skills (that are at the start based on your base stats) are in fact different aspects of your personality and they speak to you. And as each skill (like for example Logic) is getting stronger, you hear its voice more and more, which creates such an interesting dynamics (there are 24 skills!) to any dialog you have with others or even with yourself. There is also a thought cabinet, where you can internalize thoughts over time which further defines, who your character is, and it is such a delight (at least for me) to know, that your character is actually thinking about something and trying to figure it out. This all would not be of course possible if the writing was boring, but it is so not boring. All the interaction with the world is done via a dialogue system (yes, no combat mechanics, thank you very much) and the authors made sure, that the text is always captivating. I don't want to spoil anything from the (great) story, but I want to at least mention that NPCs always seemed like actual characters with agendas.

And then there are million other things and tiny details I loved and I want to mention, like that the colour of text in the dialogue screen reminds me of the colour of text from (my very favorite) Planescape Torment; fact that all your possible responses in dialogues seem to be what is actually forming in your character's head so you can sometimes say to yourself "I don't want to say any of those things"; the lovely sadness of the music by British Sea Power; the bleak but still hopeful atmosphere of the game world; the dense lore that I felt is not being dumped on me but very gently offered to explore; humour that does not feel forced, but naturally emerges from situations that aren't necessary funny; fact that although there are loads of text, the game always presents it in relatively short paragraphs, so you don't feel overwhelmed; the visual style reminding me of watercolours paintings; your cop-partner Kim Kutsaragi alias "Vergilius-in-disguise" and many more...

Of course nothing is perfect, and even though I am so over the moon from this game, the system of white checks (skill checks that is possible to do over if failed after you level up the needed skill) tends to turn into sort of a game check list that sometimes breaks the immersion.

But all in all this was definitely the best game experience I had all year and possibly one of the best game I played. Ever. So thumbs up. :) (But yeah, if you don't feel like reading, probably don't play this).

Yes, yes, it's haaaaaaaard, notforgiving and bla bla bla... but it's also very well designed, beautifully crafted world, with interesting story that leaves a lot of room for your own imagination and yet is still captivating, with NPCs and their own story arcs that are actually deeply moving, awesome animations for each weapon, quite dynamic combat (if you want to) and boss battles that you won't easily forget... and it's not actually that hard.

However the port is a bit junky, so rather play with some mods (nexus!)
