Scenarios, perks, and new ships are unlocked through leveling up your game, through the successful completion of scenarios. The sectors are randomly generated at the beginning of the game, making each new game fairly unique. To say the this is an FTL clone would be an unfair statement. It is in the same genre, but definitely not the same. It may have borrowed concepts, but there are enough differences that it isn't a virtual ripoff. For one, the graphics are improved and there are lots of giant space monsters to fight as well.
