Half-Life 1 from 1998 had advanced cockroach AI that reacts to blood, corpses and other food, light in the surrounding environment, gunshots and the player's footsteps. Bear in mind that the cockroaches are not playing any major part in the game, they were supposed to run around and go "splat" when you stepped on them, that's it.
