This game has an unbelievable amount of choice and options with incredible depth. Watching people going through the campaigns on very hard and legendary difficulty shows how many things to focus on including diplomacy, trade, population growth and happiness. The custom battle system appears to be incredible to set up armies and go at it. The battle system even saves those army setups if you want. I highly recommend looking at game play videos to take in all the depth if you are not sure if the game is for you.

The four playable characters are all fun to play. The game pushes players to use teamwork which makes for a solid coop experience. Hopefully, they will continue to add new content that will appeal to more people.
What sold me on the game was the random map generator, which keeps things from getting stale. There are grindable weapon overclocks to shoot for to keep things fresh as well.
Edit: So, a year later (2/21), and the thing that impresses me most is the fact that they keep adding things to the game, and at the same time they are interested in what the player base wants via a survey. The survey was fairly basic, but I like the fact that it let me let them know what things I would like to see them focus on.
I would like to see a lot of additions, including more customizable weapons, vehicles, jet packs, more varied monster types, bases to build, etc., but the additional game-types and monsters over the last few patches have been positive steps forward.
I read a negative review that stated that there just wasn't enough for his character to do, so I wanted to outline what each class does on a typical mission. The gunner is always keeping an eye on his team to protect them. This may be a cakewalk on level 2, but the higher levels will prove that separating from the team can be disastrous. They are also always on the lookout for mining minerals etc. as everyone on the team should be doing. The driller is responsible for getting the team better access to locations with the ease of his drilling skill. His AOE prowess in a fight should be utilized by his positioning to best slow/stop a group of monsters with either the flamethrower or freeze gun. The scout is always looking over the terrain, zipping to locations to quickly get to objectives and assess areas of the map. He should also utilize the engineer to reach and mine tough to reach spots. The engineer is also important for horde rushes by utilizing good placement of his turrets. He is ready to assist the scout and others with his platform gun to make mining easier and quicker for the team.

Lots of mods make this game a solid choice for survivalists with different takes on the genre. Highly recommended.
