Love it, feels like Quake, smells like Quake, plays like Quake, it's Quake! I'm not sure how I missed that this game existed, perhaps timing is everything as the game seems to be in a decent state and is getting some development attention - new map and a few new champions on the way as I hear.

After reading the pinned review from Vindi I almost passed on giving QC a try, I'm very glad I didn't! Vindi's review seems a bit stuck in the past with his comparison views to Q3. Also, his paragraph about queue times and performance doesn't add up on my end. I've been loading into matches quickly with a queue time of less than a minute, and I haven't seen any bots in the matches I've been in. On the performance side I am literally playing on a 10 year old machine, Intel Q9450 with 4gb DDR2, and a Radeon 5850 2gb card. Graphics are set to low of course, looks about as I expected in low mode definitely not glistening with eye popping fidelity, but good enough to enjoy. My frames are about 50fps pretty consistently in TDM matches with 10 people, much to my surprise. Perhaps Vindi's hardware isn't quite quite as beefy as he'd like to believe, and should consider toning down the gfx. I'd say maybe there was a performance patch but he posted just a few days ago, so I don't think so.

As a long time Quake player from way back in the day that racked up life melting hours in Quake, since Quake 2. Played Quake 3, and the mod Rocket Arena for long enough to probably earn a masters degree ( which probably would have been a better life choice ) I can't for the life of me understand what the gripes are about map design and design choices. The maps, art, and design choices are Quake, on point. The character movement, control, weapon feel, and projectile mechanics behave exactly as I've known them to be for decades, and I would b*#ch if it felt different, but it doesn't, the mechanics are Quake, and it's fantastic. Jumping in and playing feels like riding a bike, my heart starts pumping the adrenaline starts flowing, it's a total blast.

With all the Quake in QC I'm not complaining about the new special abilities, to me it's a nice modern touch with something new for us old players. The abilities add an additional layer of strategy by adopting some modern concepts, they add some variation that feels fun, and still feels like Quake. Besides, some of us played Q3 mods that added special abilities to the characters back in the day, and they were fun.

I guess if I was having ping issues I might gripe about a server browser, my ping is like 25ms. Though, I do see some other players with higher pings mostly sub 100ms, and an occasional 200ms. I know players these days are aghast at anything that isn't a LAN latency, riddle me this though, in the last match I played the top player on my team with 21 frags had a 200ms ping, the other team was all sub 100ms, and we flattened those poor suckers. I have a suspicion that skill at the game may have been involved in that outcome. I also don't think you can really do a ranked system with self hosted servers, probably to much potential ambiguity.

With all that said, my KDR (Kill Death Ratio) has been between 1.6 and 4, landing me in mostly second place in my matches. Thought I would throw that in for comparison sake, given I'm on ancient hardware, and there are probably a whole lot of people trying Quake for the first time, that are probably used to games like Fortnite, Overwatch, Call of Duty, etc. There is a very unique play style and map strategy to Quake, that takes time to master. So if you were king shizzle in Fortnite and the like, and are struggling to stay above a 1 KDR in Quake, or make a 2 KDR with your shizzle rig of monetary plunder, and alien backbone bandwidth, don't QQ, just get gud.

I genuinely hope this game gets more development attention from Id and Bethesda, they have something really good here!

Frag on peeps
