Honestly incredible for the price point. The game is surprisingly feature-rich for a game that just entered Early Access, and is surprisingly stable. This feels less like Early Access and more like initial release. The combat is fun, and if you at all enjoy games like Valheim or The Forest where you build up and craft your way to dominance you'll love this game.

This is easily one of the best map making tools out there, mostly for the incredible Workshop support.

At the time of writing this I have 587 hours in this game, and I regret very very few of them. You might think "Wait, shouldn't you not regret any of them?" and no, because the game isn't perfect, but it is very very good!

Pros:
+The game looks great!
The game is generally great looking. I'm not a huge graphics afficiando, but it looks good.

+The combat gameplay is fun!
The gameplay is fast-paced and skill oriented. I've heard some people describe it as souls-like, and that's not totally accurate (attacks don't consume stamina in most cases), but it's also not totally wrong. Like Dark Souls, when you break it down this is secretly a rhythm game. You have to think about how long your attack's animations take and what options it'll give you compared against what attacks a monster has. Dark Souls is the same way! However, this game's stamina management is largely not based on attacks, but instead is fuel for dodging. There's a few attacks that do consume stamina, and some weapons have to think about stamina management more than others.

+There's a variety in play styles!
So, a lot of people pick up this game, grab a weapon, have a bad time, and decide the game isn't for them. However, each type of weapon is essentially a 'class' in another game with it's own whole set of abilities, mechanics, and sometimes even minor details that long-time users of the weapon will know how to get the most out of but won't be apparent to a new user. With my 587 hours, I can confidently say that I have 'mastery' of about two weapons. If you don't like a weapon, try another one! Greatsword too slow? Try out Dual Blades. DB Reach too short? Try Longsword! The game almost entirely changes, and sometimes you may find that one weapon type has an easier time with a certain monster than another. Some weapons are low or high mobility, and a lot of weapons may seem one way until you discover a technique that totally changes your playstyle. The Lance is renowned by many to be a slow weapon because your walk speed gets agonizingly slow, but once you realize that a Lance is never intended to 'walk' but instead Guard Advance, Charge, or Dodge in a direction you can discover that it's the second or third most mobile weapon in the game when used properly. Similarly, the 'support weapon' Hunting Horn has some of the most single-hit damage potential around.

Best of all, no weapon in this game is 'non viable'. If you find a weapon or playstyle that works, even if some people (myself included) will regard it as 'suboptimal', you CAN play and beat the game effectively with it.

+A high skill ceiling, but a low skill floor!
This game has a huge amount of room to improve if you're willing to put a lot of time into the game. However, don't let that scare you off! I have plenty of friends who are 'casual' hunters who get by just fine. You don't have to put several hours into watching guide videos and researching builds and mechanics to be good at this game, but that option is there if you want it and there is ALWAYS room to improve your hunt.
As a quick word on that, some weapons are more complex than others. The Charge Blade and Heavy/Light Bowgun are a good deal more technical and require a lot of thought, while something like the Bow, Hammer, or Greatsword are actually quite simple. Don't be fooled though - there's plenty of room to refine gameplay even in 'simple' weapons. The Lance is considered a relatively 'simple' weapon and I still discover something once in a while.

+A large and mostly friendly community!
This game has subreddits, a plethora of YouTube videos, and more! If you like engaging in fan communities or reading guides and whatnot, this game has that. It's not exactly an MMO, but it is very multiplayer friendly. I mostly play with friends, and you can also matchmake with randos or browse public open groups. It's a good time!
While you CAN cheat and mod this game, I have only very rarely heard of someone cheating.

~Gear isn't the be-all end-all in this game!
No matter how good your gear in this game, if you aren't learning from the gameplay you will get curb stomped. The biggest upgrade you ever get in this game is what you, the player, learn from your hunts. That's not to say gear doesn't matter, it just means that you're almost never going to find yourself totally unable to go on because you need to gear up. Cheating in gear won't make you win the game, and it'll only make hunts marginally easier by the time you hit High Rank. That being said, paradoxically this game's progression IS entirely in gear. Some players may love this, others may not. Just don't come in expecting level ups and player characteristics beyond appearance.

~Mod support... kinda!
So, this game has a weird relationship with mods. There does appear to be an anticheat, but as far as I (and anyone else I've asked online!) nobody has actually been banned by it. Even obviously cheat-y mods like Trainers/instant kills/every items is buyable in the shop seem to be totally fine. This also includes some mods that do things like change appearances, make items on the ground easier to spot, etc. There's a Nexus Mods section for this game, though you should be aware that not everything there is going to be compatible with the latest patches.
No judgement if you decide to cheat, but remember to respect other player's wishes and keep things like insta-kill cheat or invulnerability to single player or with buds who are cool with it please!

~This game can be a little grindy, and the central gameplay loop isn't for everyone!
I did say the game isn't perfect, and it's true. The game's central gameplay loop is to hunt monsters to get parts to hunt monsters and repeat. The game is about perfecting builds, improving as a player and a hunter. That being said, if you don't like that central gameplay loop, this isn't going to be a good time for you.
The game isn't too terribly grindy, though. Once in a while you'll struggle to make a monster drop a part, but usually that means you have to attack a specific part enough to break it for any real chance at rewards. There's also a lot of mechanics in place to give you alternate ways to get materials, or to make the grind a little less intensive.

-The first 20-30 minutes of this game are rough!
Monster Hunter games almost have a tradition of having bad early games. You have a couple of really uninteresting quests you have to do early on, and that may turn some people off. Give it until you finish the Great Jagras hunt - if that wasn't fun for you, that's when you should decide how you feel about this game. Maybe try to re-fight the Jagras with a different weapon and see how you feel first though - they really do all play quite differently.

-Nitpick: Weapon appearance variety isn't what it used to be!
Newcomers to the franchise might think there's a decent-ish variety to weapon appearance, but in past games every single weapon had a completely unique model with almost no reused/modified assets. MHW does.

=== FINAL SCORE ===
Overall, if I had to give the game a number, I'd say it's a 9/10 for me, but on the whole is probably more a 7.5 or 8.5/10. But also numbers are totally meaningless , and the rest of the review is overall going to be a lot more comprehensive. I'd say if nothing else, it's worth trying this game out.

The gameplay is really fun, and the whole thing would be enjoyable. However, if you try to play with friends, it's a complete nightmare. Starting or ending a mission, you have to wait about five minutes for the game to find a session. It's just nightmarishly long, and the missions aren't long enough to make that amount of wait time seem inconsequential. Additionally, when inviting friends to play over steam, often time they would be unable to join and we'd have to retry constantly. And a couple times, we'd all be in game and suddenly I'd be shifted into a solo private game for no discernable reason. It was just awful. If they can ever fix those weird issues, I'll change my recommendation status. But until then, this is basically unplayable.

It's a great game. It's nothing super-new or innovative, but it knows what it is, and does it well. If you like top-down shooters, this is a game well worth your money. Good singplayer, GREAT multiplayer.
