This was a tough one for me to suss out because of both how distanced I am from its release and how accustomed I know I have become to its innovations. I found long stretches of the game a tad boring and feel that it compares poorly to Black Mesa - which obviously benefits from a more modern touch - and even to personal pre-Half Life 2 favourites Call Of Duty and Return To Castle Wolfenstein. So credit goes to the gravity gun, which features prominently in all the best levels, and to Valve's reliable sense of humour.

Pretentious attempt at meta-commentary shackled to a middling shooter game. Spoiler: you are the baddie in "Spec Ops: The Line" because you choose to play "Spec Ops: The Line". I would like to recommend that you don't be the baddie and instead play something else.

I remain unconvinced that a series premised on decapitating, vaporizing, axing, and incinerating Nazis benefits from the pseudo-cerebral approach taken by Machine Games; still, there remains something to be said for decapitating, vaporizing, axing, and incinerating Nazis.

Regressive and crass, absolutely, but also one of the most spectacular games ever made. Features multiple classic levels, a ludicrous vision of World War 3, and an enduring ability to both overwhelm and mesmerize.

Middling shooter with a rather mundane take on the post-apocalypse; this is a below-average game from an above-average developer. Recommended only if you've played through all the other post-apocalypses out there.

Overlong and plagued by far too many grey corridors and unchallenging hacking minigames, but few games invite player creativity and engagement with big philosophical questions like this one does.

Loses The New Order's high-art pretensions and is a substantially better game because of it. Braindead, silly, and extremely fun.
