This game isn't even remotely close to ready, even for an early access release. There might be 8 hours of content before what little there is to do dries up. Medieval dynasty launched with far more content and optimization. I'm not sure why this game is getting a pass by a number of users simply because it was an early access release, we have countless examples of well done EA releases that offer far more content, replayability and optimization (and for less money).

This isn't a journey with the developers like some would attempt to suggest, there are core features of a "dynasty" game that simply aren't in the game, and there's no amount of player input that is going to impact their implementation. The game simply needs more time. Having a partial map virtually devoid of life, with a few towns, a few quests and a few structures to build doesn't qualify this as a healthy EA release.

I will revisit this game when it actually has some of the core mechanics necessary to enjoy a dynasty style game for more than a few hours, and I will adjust my review accordingly, but until then, this review is staying negative.

Wait for Medieval Dynasty co-op if you are looking for a good dynasty co-op experience or just simply wait if you were looking for a good single player experience in this game.

A year later, even with a bunch of improvements, and this game is still objectively ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ than the Vermintide 2 release in every imaginable way. Most of what I wrote below still holds true, aside from adding in more ways to upgrade weapons and actually having fleshed out skill trees. The guns still almost all feel like trash and the combat as a whole is clunkier than V2. What a waste.

I didn't have high expectations for this game, as the company has a long history of making ridiculous decisions with respect to their games. I did, however, expect the worst version of this game would be a complete re-skin of Vermintide 2. I was quite wrong, this game is objectively worse than Vermintide 2 in every meaningful way.

Items like lore and music are just preference, so I won't discuss them in detail here. I prefer the 40k universe, but it doesn't really have any impact on the major issues I will bring up with this game.

To start, the game is unfinished, it should not have been released in this state. Crashing to desktop should have been advertised as a feature, as it will happen very regularly. Compounding this issue is that my keybindings get partially reset every time the game closes (or crashes), so I have to redo the bindings every time I load in. Similarly, video settings also seem to get reset fairly regularly.

Load screens...oh the load screens, even the load screens have load screens, and they aren't short waits either. Some of them make no sense either. To simply change classes will dump you into an extended load screen, probably related to the fact that the Mourningstar "hub" in between missions is a shared space. Seeing a handful of other people run around adds nothing to the game, except possibly a nice, refreshing load screen.

The reward system is not very rewarding. You can earn 3 different kinds of currency from missions, all can be used to upgrade your gear or buy new gear. Occasionally you will get a random piece of trash item for completing a mission that you'll more than likely not even consider using as a doorstop. Great. At least you got some money to buy something useful right? Wrong. The store doesn't offer you a full compliment of the weapon classes you "unlocked" from leveling up, just a handful of garbage at varying rarity and stats. It's okay though, that list refreshes every hour, so just keep playing and maybe something decent will show up!

I mentioned upgrading. Crafting and upgrading are a core feature of both vermintide game. This game released with almost none of the crafting available "Coming soon!". You can upgrade the rarity, which can add an extra perk or blessing, you can't tinker with any of the other modifiers at all, 3 of the 4 crafting options aren't available. Don't worry though, they were listening to the community, and managed to sneak in that micro transaction cosmetic store everyone was asking for! They even sell the currency in parcels that don't match the costs of the gear, so you'll get to have leftovers! What a win.

Moving on. In classic Fatshark style, they've aimed for opacity over transparency when it comes to item stats, abilities, and feats. Very little is explained, we have to make inferences and hope we're right. I suppose I expected this, as they happily carried that forward from V1 into V2 as well.

What I didn't expect was the lack of classes that this game offers. Each character in V2 had 3 classes on launch, for a total of 15. This game has 4 total classes, that's it. So much less diversity in gameplay is offered here, the game simply doesn't feel like it was ready.

The story. I have 50 hours in and I still don't know wtf the point is other than purging heretics and getting "trust" (your levels) for a bunch of uncharismatic npcs. It's okay, you don't have to watch the pointless cutscenes where they all tell you over and over that they don't trust you...until the last one where they tell you they trust you. Yay! we did it! They trust us now, we won the game!!! The stories were light in V1 and V2, but this is among the most uninspired, lazy implementations of a "story" I've seen. I knew what the ultimate goals were in the vermintide games, there was some direction, this one is literally just "kill heretics, gain trust" K.

The gamplay. The absolute core mechanics will be familiar to anyone who has played V1 or V2, it's probably the only reason the game has any pull (until they "rebalance" said mechanics a dozen times over the next 18 months in classic Fatshark fashion). Having said that, again, V2 offers more. I'm not talking about all the stuff they added later, I'm comparing launch to launch. It came with more mid level monsters (mini bosses?), it had FAR more diversity in map visuals, and it actually had act bosses, all of which were very unique from one another. Darktide has an end of mission boss, just one. It couldn't be more uninspired either. break paladin bubble, hurt health, repeat. That's it, that's all it is. He walks around and shoots, sometimes swings a melee weapon. This is weak.

Adding to the gameplay issues I observed, the increased sponginess of the elites and specials in this game really takes away from what could have been great gunplay. In this game it's not a headshot, it's a headmagazine. It makes so many of the weapons feel utterly impotent. Sure, you can headshot the basic scrubs, but who is really sniping them anyway? There are a very few guns that feel decent, but are hampered but other very weird design choices. Why do I have to rack the boltgun every time I get wobbled or knocked back? Especially when it does NOTHING in the event the thing is empty already. So I'll go through this weird animation, then I'll have to reload it after that, it's ridiculous. Anyway, V2 was exceptionally satisfying taking down elites and specials with our ranged arsenal, it was very impactful, this game doesn't offer that same kind of experience. Some (many) of the weapons are akin to tossing a handful of pebbles at them.

Map selection. You can go to the terminal to select your mission, but the difficulty of the mission is locked. Okay, whatever, just do quickplay and select your desired skill level right? Sort of, it only selects from missions listed at that difficulty, not the entire suite of missions the game has to offer. So you'll end up playing the same few missions over and over again until it refreshes (and I don't actually remember how often that is). How is this, in any way, an improvement to the system in place in V2? I sure hope you like the smelter mission, you're going to be there a lot in the next few hours. On top of this, many missions look samey AND they actually reuse missions, you're just running from the other side. These compounding issues ♥♥♥♥ the life out of the entire experience (further than everything else already does). Lastly, the names for the missions couldn't be more forgettable. Most of them are just a random string of letters and numbers designating areas of the hive city....I still don't even remember the names of most of the places "oh, that one that has some sandy areas, yeah, I remember that one". Could there not be some more colloquial names used to at least help distinguish the regions? Just look at the names in V2. These are names you can easily reference in conversation. (Righteous Stand, Convocation of Decay, Screaming Bell, Into the Nest....and so on). Instant recognition.

This, most definitely, is not a complete list of offenses, just the most egregious, and unacceptable. The dev team shows no respect for the players, and as such, I have no respect for them.

This game has fps capped at 60. It also doesn't allow binding actions to the mouse, and has some hard-coded keybindings. This is unacceptable for any game being released in 2022, especially a triple A title.

This review is based on a predominantly co-op experience.

This game does a decent job creating the atmosphere through visuals and music. Leveling and gearing up also feels reasonably rewarding, but that is the extent of what was done right with this game.

The map is horrendous. It's exceptionally difficult, relative to other games, to really interpret where things actually exist in the world without spending far too much time scanning.

The minimap makes it near impossible to even see where your teammate is located. It's just some faint shadow, and if said shadow was too far away, you'd have no way of determining general direction without popping open the map itself.

There are numerous instances of invisible terrain blocking movement.

Keybindings reset on multiple occasions. Fine for those that use default, not so much for those that do not.

The real deal breaker is that missions just seem to arbitrarily break. Missions will show no objectives, but clearly haven't been completed. Kill missions will fail to actually spawn in required creatures to enable completion. Zone elevators refusing to operate, completely blocking progression of both main story missions and side missions alike. There is no game to be had if the missions themselves frequently fail to function.

I recommend against buying the game until the bugs are addressed, particularly if you intend on playing with friends.

Don’t buy this garbage!

These devs have, once again, proven how incompetent and how disconnected they are with the bulk of their player base. The constant “rebalancing” of core gameplay this game has undergone in the 1.5 years of its existence is ridiculous. What’s worse is that every single major patch comes with so many changes that the balance is completely broken upon its arrival. Coupled with the reintroduction of long fixed bugs EVERY time they patch this game (and obviously the introduction of new ones!) the game becomes borderline unplayable. This company, at best, caters to the <1% at the top of this game, and at worst, caters to nothing but their own half-baked ideas as to what they think the game should play like, with no regard as to how enjoyable that may feel.

With respect to the WOM expansion in particular, this is the worst state the game has ever been in, and as a long time player of Vermintide 1 as well, I’d go so far as saying it’s the worst shape either of the games have ever been in. Combat now feels clunky, slow and far less satisfying. Dodge is useless now, you can’t rely on it to actually dodge at all. In fact, this is a core principle of combat as a whole now – nothing works reliably, so have fun feeling helpless. The heroes feel far less heroic as a result of this. Beastmen feel overtuned and far more dangerous than either of the other factions.

I haven’t even mentioned the plethora of bugs yet, but I’ll stick with the most noticeable. Tonnes of exciting new ways to crash the game. The spawning of both normal enemies and specials is completely messed up. Often you’ll end up fighting off an endless horde with 6+ active specials (many spawning in duplicate) at a time – throw in a large handful of elites and a mini boss just to make it really fun. A classic bug, which they have reintroduced numerous times throughout the existence of this game is being hit through your block. You’ll see your shields up, yet creatures will pummel you anyway. How about no audio notification that something is about to hit you from behind? Getting hit through walls is always exciting. An Invisible wall on the new map literally forcing a restart. Janky terrain on the new map not only messing up normal movement, but seemingly making it possible for enemies to melee hit you from well beyond your own means. Hit detection feels worse than in previous patches.

The weaves…wow, I have no idea how they thought this would be good end game content. None of your progression translates to the base game, none of it. The grind (and it’s a stupid, tedious grind) seems so pointless since none of the progress means a thing when the new season starts – you just get to do it again. Damn, what an amazing reward system, thanks Fatshark. Matchmaking hardly even works for it anyway. If you don’t have a group of friends to play with, you won’t be playing this much, or at all (I recommend the latter).

Apologies for the long review, but this company has taken a good game and turned it into an unrecognizable, steaming heap of garbage. If they choose not to revert some of these absurd changes and fix these new and recurring bugs, this game will lose a lot of its player base. I don’t mean the influx of players from this recent sale either, I mean those that made up the bulk of the (small) base prior to this expansion announcement.

Fatshark truly doesn't have a clue what they're doing with this game. I've been a supporter of these devs since the beginning of Vermintide 1, but my patience in this incompetent dev team has run out. It's not normal to constantly "balance" a game every major patch, and in doing so, completely breaking mechanics that have long since been fixed. I'd say I'll evaluate again once they patch some of this nonsense out, but really, they don't deserve it.

Don't waste your time here.

A very addictive game. An excellent open-world survival game and worth every penny spent. This game has so much to offer and with over 40 hours of play I've barely scratched the surface.
