Have you played Subnautica 1 before? If not, go play that now. It is a better game all-around.

Below Zero is okay, on the whole. If you liked the first one, you'll probably like Below Zero and will get a good 20-30 hours out of it easily. But the thing that made Subnautica 1 great was that you truly felt alone, stuck on a world full of water, with nowhere to go but deeper below. The sense of isolation was remarkable.

With Below Zero, we now have characters that directly talk with our own character and so that feeling of isolation - probably the best thing about Subnautica - is simply removed entirely. Then tack on the questionable idea of an above water area that is far too large and difficult to navigate and it just falls a bit flat.

I have been playing this from very early in the beta and it is unfortunate because the feedback on the above water area was all there from the start. The story I am more forgiving on as they did change writers mid-way through the game. But one wonders what game we could have had if they had spent more time building out the underwater parts of the map (the map is fairly small) instead of re-doing voice acting work multiple times and designing a large above ground area that is nothing but aggravating for the player to be in.
