While it is an open world game and not as story driven as the predecessors it still manages to bring the MGS feeling across but not all the time.
While the mechanics for close quarter combat, shooting and sneaking are really well done, i think it couldn't quite accomplish getting the open world and the story to flow together. Parts of the story need to be listened to from tapes you acquire by doing missions, and while you can listen to those tapes while you free roam in the open world if you need to "fast travel" via helicopter the annoying cutscenes (which you have to watch everytime you fly anywhere) stop the tapes from playing.
So listening to the tapes and doing some optional side missions in quick succession is just not possible and makes it kinda annoying to catch up on backstory when you have 10+ tapes to listen to and still want to play the game.

Gameplay therefore is 5-10 minutes of sneaking or action into 3-5 min departure (waiting for helicopter, boarding, cutscene, choosing new mission via PDA, cutscene, flying out to it, waiting for helo to reach location). Which completely destroys the flow. It wouldn't be so bad if you could just listen to the tapes but you can't. Because the flight is actually a loading screen and you can't fly to a different part on the map you have to return to your ACC (base).
Flying in realtime while being able to listen to a different part of the map would've been the way to go i think. You could also rely on the Horse to get you everywhere but there's better buddies(Dog) in the game.

A huge part of the game is also managing your base, building new platforms, researching weapons, sending troops to do some fighting, gathering or other stuff. All done via the PDA from anywhere, which is nice if you like basebuilding.

Overall solid experience, but not as good as it could have been.
