This game is an extremely enjoyable as a single player game. The strategy is complex, but not too difficult to get into, and making your own species and empire gives the game a personal touch. Once you open the steam workshop and the major dlcs (Utopia, Apocalypse), the game gets a lot more fun and interesting. Blowing up planets gives you the feeling that you are the most powerful being in the galaxy.
However, playing this game with friends completely changes the game. Teaming up with a friend and plotting against your galactic neighbor is exciting, and making a move after planning for multiple sessions is fun and interesting every time.
9/10, some of the dlc content should be in the base game
