Played it all in one sitting. Sue me, I was on my weekend on a weekday and I work nights. What better way to spend it then a brand new horror game by Frictional?

If you're looking for a spiritual sequel to Amnesia, this is only halfway there. SOMA is far more story driven, with a voiced protaganist this time. The setting is also a complete 180. It's very futuristic, and brings up a lot of philosophical questions about the soul. Throw in a splash of Bioshock (haha puns) and this is what you get.

The gameplay is essentially the same as the Penumbra and Amensia series. Part "Walking Simulator" and part "hide from the scary monsters". You go around interracting with things, picking up items, hiding from psuedo-zombies that screw up your vision, and keep progressing. An interesting addition is a 3 strikes system with the enemies. If you meet one face to face you essentially black out and wake up in the same spot you were attacked, with the enemy that found you some ways off, allowing you to hide again. Each time you're attacked your vision gets a little more blurry and your movement lopsided, but you're still able to continue.

The story is absolutly delicious, but it's hard to tell too much about it with giving major spoilers. Essentially, you're a Canadian you got into a nasty car accident, has pretty bad brain damage, and decides to go through some experimental treatment. Within the blink of an eye, you're suddenly in another world with no idea of what's going on.

All in all, a solid game from Frictional, and I look forward to see what they come up with next.

I'm pretty sure the protaganist wears a trilby for the entire novel.

"Quck Time Event - The Game"

This needs to be said right off the bat. The game is chock full of Action Commands and Quick Time Events. They are everywhere. 90% of the cutscenes will be Quick Time Events. Every boss fight will have at least 5, if not more. If you despise QTE's with every fiber of your being, this game is not for you. But there is good news! This game doesn't go all Resident Evil and make you watch 10 minutes of cutscenes beforehand or throw a game over at you if you screw up. Rather, the game just pulls a Prince of Persia: Sands of Time bit and simply rewinds the QTE back a few seconds. The prompts rarely change, so if you miss something, you can do it again very quickly instead of waiting forever to get it right.

In a nutshell, the gameplay is action/platformer. You will be wall running, jumping, and swinging through levels while slicing up zombies and other monstrosities through Japan as it's taken over by some kind of virus. Ken (The protaganist) is basically Ryu from Ninja Gaiden, slicing everything into 1/8ths. You get three weapons, a standard sword, a heavy sword for armored enemies, and daggers on strings (think sword-chucks) to clear swarms of easy enemies.

The story isn't anything special, but it thrives on being absurd. At one point you will land a broken airplace on a highway, and then pull it to a stop. By yourself. You will also smash a giant spider with a wrecking ball. It's all in good fun.

As was stated, QTE's make up a huge chunk of the game, so it tries to keep them non-punishing. Nothing bad happens when you fail, it just rewinds a bit. There's a score system in place which includes how many times you failed QTE's in a chapter, but you have a fail a lot (like 100's of times) for it to make a dent in the rating system.

If you like watching a super ninja slice, dice, smash, and destroy everything that Resident Evil came up with first, all the while running down skyscrapers, then this game is perfect for you.

The best way to describe this game is a "choose your own adventure" visual novel that doesn't have any dead ends, but rather has different endings at the very end of the game based on what you picked up (or didn't pick up).
