When I bought the game, I had a different idea of what it would be like. For this reason, the gameplay disapointed me quite a bit and was having a mostly neutral to negative experience throughout. It was only after the end sequence that I had the realization that Still Wakes the Deep is a whole different type of experience and my first impressions towards it were a result of my own lack of understanding of it and its genre. The game is just a vessel to a story, your own actions are secondary. So the right mindset when approaching this title is to have in mind that you are not playing, you are experiencing its events.

Granted, even with that being said, the gameplay could be improved exponentially with simple changes as it suffers a lot from simplicity, lack of options, lack of actuall puzzles, too much QTE where you simply press a single button to perform an action and above all of that, the game is crushingly linear and you are not rewarded for exploring. The level design is simple and repetitive. And even for a story based game, that is a big downside since, like I mentioned, minor tweeks and a slightly different approach to the gameplay could result in a big improvement. To summarize all of that, the game is not challenging at all.

On top of that, there are a few ridiculous moments, one in particular where the character is unable to open a door, only to recieve a call where the person tells him to kick the door in order to open it. As if you "just unlocked door kick" because someone told you to. At that moment I couldn't help but feel like I was controling a complete idiot. Oh, and you never get to use that again. That one scene is the only moment where you get to kick a door in order to force open it.

Another downside is that the game doesn't seem to understand some of its strenghts. The outside area, where you get to experience the oil rig is one of the best settings I've ever seen in a game, and I can safelly say that this is not only my subjective opinion but it's objectively true since it's not something we get to see often in a game and is very original for that matter. Not only for the industrial look and feel but also the fog and the open sea in the distance. The game, however, underutilizes this setting for some reason, and instead, 80% of its runtime is spent indoors, where the environment is just as generic and blend as any other game. The type of environment we've seen a thousand times before. This is a decision that I simply can't understand.

With all of that out of the way, it's understandable why I was not having a positive experience. But all of that changed and the game redeemed it self with the final sequence. That was honestly so touching, sincere, emotional, and beautiful that my entire view of the game suddenly switched. It almost brought me to tears and I'm not lying. Not only it was a blast to experience it also changed my understanding of what the game was entirely about and made me feel like I had just experience a true work of art.

The dialogs are so well written and the voice acting so magnificent that I actually felt like these were real people.

I will most likely not play the game again, but I am for sure going to watch the ending on YouTube many many times again in the future. Congratulations to the amazing team responsible for this production.

This game is a true work of art. Beautiful art, amazing gameplay and cute story.
The physics are flawless, the puzzles are simple and intuitive.
When you get the hang of swinging around, it becomes extremely satisfying.
Some achievements require a little bit of grinding, but not to the point of becoming tedious.

I had an amazing time overall. Played for 7 hours and enjoyed every single second of it.
Not sure if I'll give it another go since the game is short, and I've already explored everything it has to offer. Highly recommend it, though!

Worst game I've ever played but I absolutely loved every second of it.

Will I play it again? No
Will I remember my time with it fondly? Absolutely
